New Donor trying to figure out why I'm not folding

Post by oneill95 »

This is my second attempt to try to fold with mostly the same result and I can't seem to find a solution online. On all previous attempt the progress bar has remained at 0% but at some point I must have done something to make it temporarily work to get to 0.4%. I'm running the most recent and correct download with my dual core 2.1GHz CPU with 4GB of RAM.

Here's a screenshot of the controller:

Here's what the log says:

Code: Select all

I have no idea what to do seeing as it briefly worked. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the F@H Forum oneill95,

Your log file shows a lot of configuration changes and some of them required the FahCore to restart. The configuration that your F@H Client is using is the last one:

Code: Select all

12:33:42:<config>
12:33:42:  <!-- Folding Core -->
12:33:42:  <checkpoint v='30'/>
12:33:42:
12:33:42:  <!-- Folding Slot Configuration -->
12:33:42:  <power v='full'/>
12:33:42:
12:33:42:  <!-- Network -->
12:33:42:  <proxy v=':8080'/>
12:33:42:
12:33:42:  <!-- Slot Control -->
12:33:42:  <pause-on-battery v='false'/>
12:33:42:
12:33:42:  <!-- User Information -->
12:33:42:  <user v='Oneill95'/>
12:33:42:
12:33:42:  <!-- Folding Slots -->
12:33:42:  <slot id='0' type='CPU'>
12:33:42:    <cpus v='-1'/>
12:33:42:  </slot>
12:33:42:</config>
Since you are folding on the laptop, it would be wise to not change the default behavior of pausing when the laptop is running on the battery. Moreover, I would advise that you configure your Client for a passkey to qualify for bonus points and security reasons (http://folding.stanford.edu/home/faq/faq-passkey/).

Once you have finalized the configurations, please reboot the laptop and after that, ensure that F@H is running by opening Task Manager and looking for the process FahCore_a4.exe (32 bit) that should either be using 50% or 100%, depending on the configuration. Leave it overnight and hopefully, progress will be made. Just for a reference point, below is the data from my Intel Pentium E5400 @ 2.7 GHz folding Project 8702:
Min. Time / Frame : 00:05:55 - 1,820.70 PPD
Avg. Time / Frame : 00:05:59 - 1,790.36 PPD

Hmm, I can't determine from the log why it is/was saving the config.xml all the time, and then restarting FahCore_a4.exe soon after that, but according to the log, it didn't happen anymore with the latest config.xml save.

So, since you started folding the WU with just one CPU (out of 2), you should be seeing 50% CPU utilization in Windows Task Manager and FahCore_a4.exe being responsible for (almost) all of it. If you're seeing that, you'll probably have to wait patiently to see 1%. Since this isn't a particularly fast CPU (2.1GHz mobile dualcore), it might take "a while" for the 1% to show up. Anyway, there has been some progress at some point, according to checkpoint data:

Code: Select all

12:33:07:WU00:FS00:0xa4:Completed 1400 out of 250000 steps  (0%)
1400/250000*100% == 0.56%.

EDIT: here's some data for my E2220 2.4GHz dualcore (no HT, also driving a GPU) in addition to CPU folding at "full":

Code: Select all

 Min. Time / Frame : 00:06:52 - 1 456 PPD
 Avg. Time / Frame : 00:07:14 - 1 347 PPD
Just in case, give it an hour and then see if the 1% (or more) progress has shown up in the log.

As PantherX mentioned, the last configuration in your log is the current one in use. However, you may have noticed the WU is still folding on one core of your dual core Pentium even though the Power setting is at full. That may mean that when you downloaded the WU the setting was at the default for laptops of Light. That uses half the cores, and you may have been assigned a WU designated for only folding on a single core. Once it is done, then at the full power setting you should get WU's that will use both cores.
