Some general questions about folding

Post by Spider84 »

Hello.
I want ask several question about folding.
1. How many times one unit must be folded to be folded fully and disappear from Stats page ?
2. How many there is units at all?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, Spider84.

1. I'm a bit confused by this question. When you say Stats page, are you referring to this? If you are, that page lists Projects, not Work Units. A Project will contain probably hundreds of thousands of individual Work Units. If you want more detailed information on how this works, see here. I think the shortest a project runs is on the order of several months, while others can take a couple years. Normally an individual Work Unit is only folded once unless a) it failed on the original assignee's machine or b) the original assignee didn't return it before the deadline.

2. There are currently over 500 active non-beta projects, with new ones being added fairly regularly. Multiply that by hundreds of thousands of WUs and you end up with hundreds of millions of individual WUs.

Thanks for explanations.
Can we see the progress on projects? For example can I see how much working units are folded on project? Can I choose the project for folding?

Currently, there is a very limited method by which you can choose what projects to fold. You decide what hardware (CPU or GPU) and OS (Windows, Linux, OSX) to use for folding and within the F@H Client, you can configure the size of WUs (small, normal, big) and it's type (advanced or normal). Other than that, you don't have any control.

However, there is a plan that ensures that you can influence the WUs assigned to you based on the type of disease you have selected. While the current V7 supports this, the Servers don't so once this feature is implemented Server side, you can gain some control over what type of Projects you are folding.

The "Cause Preference" and "advanced" settings are still just preferences, though, not guarantees.

As to seeing how many WUs have been folded in a project, that's not really made public. You can sort of infer how many have been done so far by looking at the Project/Run/Clone/Gen (PRCG) numbers. As the second link I posted explains, Clones are different starting trajectories of the protein being studied in that project, Runs are variations on each Clone that differ by starting velocity, and Gens are the progression in time. To use an example, I did Project: 8704 (Run: 492, Clone:8, Gen: 29) recently. From this I can infer that there are at least somewhere on the order (492*8*29)=114,144 WUs in that project, and I can surmise that almost all of them have been folded to date. I don't know how many Clones there are in this particular project, though, nor how many Runs of each clone, nor how many Gens per Clone/Run. There may actually be fewer Gens in some Runs/Clones; certain trajectories may end up being completely unsuitable for that protein to fold into its correct shape, in which case that trajectory may end on a much earlier Gen than the others.
