Unknown Credit on WU 10503

Post by N0OA »

I seem to keep getting WU10503 [currently folding 10503 (123,0,1334)] on one of my older machines. I am using FAH v7.3.6 and I have no switches on this slot. This WU is folding on an old GT218 [NVS 3100M].

The question is, "Why is it that under the "Credit" header do I see Unknown?" I did notice that, for this WU, I do not see "Completed xxxxx out of xxxxx steps (xx%)" in the log. Instead, I simply see "Completed (xx%)" The start of this WU's log entry is attached below.

Any ideas or thoughts? I don't mind folding it, even with no points (this is for the science). But, is there a bug in this WU that's causing this? Is the WU ok?

The servers that hand out WUs for pre-Fermi Nvidia cards never had their code updated to provide that information to the v7 client, so the client just prints "Unknown." It was supposed to happen at some point, but I think it's rather low on PG's list of priorities. You are getting credited, as that's performed by the servers themselves, not the client.

As to the lack of step information, I think that's normal.

Prior to the V7 CLIENT, the only way to know the WU credit was to look it up in the Project Summary. To add this feature to the Client, a feature had to be added to the SERVER code to download the information to the client.

The code on Work Servers is upgraded occasionally, just as the version of your OS is updated occasionally. For the most part, server code updates are transparent to the Donors and rarely discussed. Those updates add new features as well as fix bugs. In this case, that particular server is running an older version of the server code that doesn't download the credit information. The adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies here since the server is working fine and the missing feature is a minor inconvenience. It'll get updated someday, but there's really no urgency.

Similarly, there are various types of FahCores to perform the scientific analysis and they go through various versions. Each FahCore (including FahCore_11) is generally developed independently of the others and in this case, the messages written to the log are not identical. Differences like that can be a potential problem for those who have written code that parses the logs but with the advent of the V7 client, the development team has explicitly stated that they will not attempt to support log-parsing code. They have provided a supported telnet interface to provide that sort of information.

If you would like to see the PPD and base point of those WU's you could use the 3rd party
software HFM.Net and add a V7 client to HFM program. As stated the server don't have the code
in place for the V7 software to give those numbers or the core type, but HFM does.
