Programs dont work out of the box for Linux

Post by Talonman »

I am trying to fold on 7 laptops that I got from work for free.

I installed the 3 linux programs correctly.
They do not have GPU's that will fold, and could be my issue...

I only want to fire them all up (soon to be 10 laptops) using the CPU only.
When I open up the graphical viewer, Connection just keeps 'trying', but will not download a work unit.
Protein reads Demo
Slot is blank.

Why does the install guide not have any more steps for me to follow???

Under Configure, using the FAHControl, it reads...

Client connection (grayed out and the word local)
It wont let me change that...

Address port 36330 (I could change that)

Password is blank.

There is no start button....

I need a better guide for folding on linux.
I used this one: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/LinGuide

It leads me to believe i just install the packages, and I am ready to roll. This could not be further from the truth.

I am not going to fight with this for days to get folding.

I vote forget the new core, and just give me a program I can install, that will work out of the box.

After days of frustration. I am getting mad. Google is no help.
Where is the 'You must do this to make our program actually fold' section.
That seems to be missing, and critical.

We need to stress the importance of a folding program, that is easy to use to the folding@home boys.

Assuming that FAHClient is running there should be a file called log.txt.

Please copy and paste the contents of the log.txt file into a post here and we'll try to help. If it's too long to put in one post use two or more.

File locations.

I will look around my system, but I assure you it is exactly what any mint user or Ubuntu user will get if they install the programs exactly as written.
I have Mint on one, and Ubuntu on the other, both fresh installs to hard drive.
Both act exactly the same.

I would bet real money that ALL linux users install the program, to see it not fold.
Frustrating to say the least. I figured on fresh OS installs, and the latest folding@home programs would be an instant win.

The answer I need is the exact same answer ALL linux users need, and should be included in the guide.

I just searched my system for log.txt, and it only found 1 file...
FONTLOG.txt.gz

No other file was found.

When you installed FAHClient did you leave the "X" in Automatically start? If so and FAHClient isn't showing up in System Monitor did you run 'sudo /etc/init.d/FAHClient start' as described in the File Locations link above or have you tried rebooting your laptop? If you removed the "X" then you have to start FAHClient manually and until you do FAHControl cannot connect to the client.

See if there's a hidden folder in your home folder called .FAHClient and look in there as well as /var/lib/fahclient.

If he unchecked that X he didn't follow the guide.

Let's back up a step here. Let's start with what version and flavor of linux you have, because the guide works well on Ubuntu 12.x and Mint 14.

I have confirmed that installing F@h works fine "out of the box" for Mint 14, which is based on Ubuntu 12.10. I checked that box, which sets F@h to run as a service and automatically run at startup in the background. If you didn't check the box, it has to be started manually.

The installation guides should be very helpful. You HAVE to install the FAHClient .deb file. The other packages are optional, but recommended.
F@h is now the top computing platform on the planet and nothing unites people like a dedicated fight against a common enemy. This virus affects all of us. Lets end it together.

OK... On my mint install I did not check the box, but I am starting 2 programs manually.
The only 2 that made icons in the 'Education' section of Mint FAHControl, and FAHViewer.
Am am not starting a mystery third program, even though I install all 3 programs.

That might be the issue,

The mystery third, iconless, program.

I did enable hidden files, and found my .FAHClient folder, and in that only 1 file...
FAHControl.db

I am in Mint 15 olivia, 64 bit.
Ubuntu 13.04 64 bit.

Both dedicated laptops have had all updates installed.

The quick fix is to install the fahclient again and use the recommended (default) setting to allow fahclient to start automatically.

I just tried using the 'reinstall' option, and then totally removed, than fresh installed fahclient.
Both actions completed successfully, but I never saw that option to start automatically.
No options at all on this install, just a completion meter successfully finishing.

Could it be in one of the other 2 app installs?

I currently have Folding@home 3d Visualization app running,
Connection-trying
Protein-Demo

FAHControl is running too, all greyed out.
Client: local Connecting inactive.

I'm thinking a third icon, for the third program is a good idea...
I want to see it, to visually verify it's running.
I would think that this third, iconless app is about 90% of the issue for new users... :D

The option to start automatically is in the fahclient installer on the same screen where you enter your userid, team # and passkey.
Did you see that screen when you installed after you "totally removed" fahclient? If not then the data is probably still there from your previous install. How did you "totally remove" fahclient(i.e. what command or program did you use)? You need to purge it so that the data you previously entered is removed too.

I used the Mint App installer that activated when I clicked on the saved program.
It had the 'Reinstall' option.
When that didn't present me with the options screen, I then went for the 'Remove', and then the 'install' option.
Still no options screen presented during the install.

And yes, I do remember seeing that screen, Team, and Name...
And did enter my data.

I just couldn't remember which app it was part of.
I installed all 3 back to back.

I think 1 small icon would solve my issue, and give me the option of starting the 3rd mystery app manually.
Then you could also edit your data there.

The default install for fahclient is to set it up as a service. I don't know about you but I've never seen an icon for a service on any operating system.

When you removed fahclient did you see a box that you could check to delete data as well as the program? You would have to check that box.

Another option is to open a terminal and type the following:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge fahclient
Enter your user password when asked.

Then you can install again and you should see the options screen.
