Checking the machines this morning I found this. It is the first error I have seen on this machine, what should I do?

The continuous immediate failure on startup is a known problem. It may indicate the WU is bad, or that it may just not run on your configuration. You can pause folding and dump the WU and see about getting another to process. Currently there are no reports in the database for this WU, I will mark this post for followup.

Thank you for your response. I have dumped the WU with the "--dump all" flag. This machine is now running another WU with no issues.

This WU has been successfully processed by someone else, so it looks to be one that would not run on your configuration.

Thanks for following up. Two questions:

1. Is that something I should worry about? There are six machines here with that hardware and OS configuration, and three more with very similar hardware and same kernel build.

2. Is it possible to figure out what would be problematic about this configuration? I am here to help, and will try to make it better if I can know how.

1. Only worry about it if you start getting a consistent pattern of these errors on more WU's. If you have overclocked any of these systems, then consider backing off the OC a touch. Beyond that just keep up on regular maintenance such as keeping the dust cleaned out. But, I have seen a few WU's fail like this on my systems over the years and 99%+ of what I got processed just fine. Of the ones that failed, about a third went on to be processed successfully by someone else, the rest were bad.

2. Hard to say if there is anything you could do. Every so often a WU is generated that may process fine at a SMP setting other than the one on your system. In your case you are at 8, no idea what the other person's setting was. They do beta testing of these projects and sometimes find problematical SMP settings and set the assignments accordingly. But sometimes a small number of specific WU's fail on settings that the vast majority are successful using. Another variable is the OS and the related folding core. They start out with the same code, but there might be subtle differences in the calculations that cause a WU to fail on one OS and be fine on another.

Is your CPU overclocked? Since the WU was completed by someone else (with unknown hardware) there's no way to directly compare your system with theirs so it's anybody's guess what happened or what you might do about it. Overclocking is just one of the most likely guesses and there would be something that you can do about it.

No, these are all dual-processor L5420 Xeons (2x 4 cores) in rackmount servers, they do not support overclocking. This has been the only failure in thousands of work units for this configuration (counting across nine machines), so maybe it was a fluke. According to HFM stats, there have been seven p7611 and six p7610 completed by these machines, one by the machine in question.

I will keep monitoring.
