Problem with Radeon 6970 GPU

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Problem with Radeon 6970 GPU

I have a Radeon 6970 GPU running with a dedicated CPU core. It should be processing multiple WU's daily, but instead is taking multiple days to run a single WU. The "Status" tab has remained unchanged at "99.99% complete" for 3 days now (no info has changed) but it does not jive with the log file:

For the past 24 hours GPU-Z reports the GPU utilization averaging @ 2% load with peaks always <10%.

Win 7 x64, driver v9.12 CCC v13.1, F@H Control v7.2.9
The SMP client seems to be running fine on the other 3 cpu cores.

First of all:
Try to finish the GPU-WU as followed:
Pause both slots.
Restart FAHClient to get the GPU-slot working again.
Set the GPU-Slot (RMB) to finish.

By running Core16 you need an odler Catalyst version to utilize the GPU up to 99%.
What you have to do is:

1. Download Catalyst Version 12.8 here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/w ... sta64.aspx
This is the latest driver known working well with Core16.

2. Use ATI-uninstall-utility to uninstall Catalyst V13.1
You can download it here: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/ ... ility.aspx

3. After restart install Catalyst 12.8 (custam install)

4.Rerun FAHClient and check GPU-utilisation . . .

Pausing & "finish" completed the current GPU & SMP WU's

I have downloaded the linked files. The amd uninstall utility warns that it will remove ALL amd driver & software (usb, chipsets, etc as well as display). I'm concerned about running it on a system that is ALL amd (chipsets, cpu, gpu)?

The only thing happens is that after using the uninstall-utility you have to reinstall all needed drivers.

But - there will be another way:
1. Download driver_fusion : http://treexy.com/products/driver-fusion

2. Uninstall the GPU-driver (start installing and select:remove) , than reboot

3. Start Windows in safe mode and use driver_fusion to delete the remaining parts of the GPU-driver.

4. Reboot and start windows in normal mode

5. Install Catalyst 12.8 (custom install)

Hello knowledgeable people...

I would like to know - if anyone is able to offer insight - is if folding performance on Radeon 6970 has a chance of getting fixed in a future driver, or if it's going to remain terrible onwards. I hope to be building an all-new PC rig for games and folding, which would mean this current PC could become a home for my now disused 6970s, if there was a sensible point to it. IE, I wouldn't want to fold on a system that produces terrible PPD/watt; if for no other reason my summer indoors temperature wouldn't like it. :)

Any information on this topic would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance.

A good indication would be to read the beta team threads about AMD performance using a new fahcore being tested over there. Sorry, can't discuss beta stuff in this public section.

Use a monitor such as Precision, Trixx or Afterburner. Watch for pulsing ticks in the usage chart. If you're seeing what looks like a really slow pulse rate with almost no utilization it has crashed. Just hit ctrl-c twice on client then kill it with the X because it isn't alive.
When you re-start client it will revert to last good output. Common AMD driver issue.
