Hi all
Been away from folding for about 3 years and building a PC to get back into it. Is there a list anywhere on net that shows PPD of various GPU's and CPU's? Trying to work out a sweet sport for CPU and GPU for my budget.
Thanks
Sheldon

- Hardware configuration: Machine #1:
Intel Q9450; 2x2GB=8GB Ram; Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4 Motherboard; PC Power and Cooling Q750 PS; 2x GTX 460; Windows Server 2008 X64 (SP1).
Machine #2:
Intel Q6600; 2x2GB=4GB Ram; Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4 Motherboard; PC Power and Cooling Q750 PS; 2x GTX 460 video card; Windows 7 X64.
Machine 3:
Dell Dimension 8400, 3.2GHz P4 4x512GB Ram, Video card GTX 460, Windows 7 X32
I am currently folding just on the 5x GTX 460's for aprox. 70K PPD - Location: Salem. OR USA
Re: PPD list - GPU and CPU
The problem with any current list is that GPU PPD is in flux right now with the advent of QRB (quick return bonus) and a brand new GPU core being tested. So any list is likely to be totally out dated very shortly.
Re: PPD list - GPU and CPU
I understand that I am just trying to work out the sweetspot for my budget and needs. I would ideally like a pretty fast CPU at the sacrifice of GPU as GPU is easy to upgrade at a later date. 500,000 PPD would be nice spot to hit. Any advice on what I should be looking at CPU and GPU wise?

Re: PPD list - GPU and CPU
Currently the only way a single machine is able to reach 500K PPD is with a 4P motherboard. If I were a futurist, I would bet that a multi-GPU setup will be able to get there eventually, but not yet. Unfortunately MB's capable of 4 processors tend to be very light on PCI-E slots. It would not surprise me that a convential single CPU MB with four double-wide PCI-E slots with 4x Titan's would get you to 500K but they do not currently have the drivers needed, yet. Right now, you have to choose one direction of the other without the flexibility to switch.
Re: PPD list - GPU and CPU
Sorry I ment 500k per month. So only 20k PPD. Just get a decent 1155 Mobo and i5 CPU and a Nvida 550 be ok?

Re: PPD list - GPU and CPU
More than OK. My i5-3570k overclocked can hit 15-20k PPD depending on workunit. My 560 TI hits 25k PPD and my 460 hits 14k PPD. ALl running in the same machine.

Re: PPD list - GPU and CPU
There are many ways to meet a 20K PPD goal relatively inexpensively. My current favorite is to buy a MB with at least two 16 bit PCI-e slots with an inexpensive x64 bit 2-core processor, a good quality 750W PS (for future GPU expansion purposes) and buy a used GTX 570/580 card (gets 30K-40K PPD per card) with the intention of expanding to 2 GPU's sometime in the future (See Core_17 in the beta section). I choose to get a higher-end card to start with because I do not wish to feel the need to junk a card if I choose to upgrade later and the used GTX 570's and 580's are relatively inexpensive. This is the GPU-only route. You can also do it by getting a new intel 8-core processor and no GPU's. I assure you, your specific plan with get there too.
Do note, that the initial up front cost is not the only cost you need to consider but also the ongoing electricity costs. In the long run it is the ongoing costs that will out-weigh the initial purchase price.

A single GTX560Ti will get you 20K per day. Costs will vary on your location but power costs are definitely worth considering.
