Bacterial infections are adept at evading the drugs we design to kill them. For example, millions of people die every year from infections with bacteria that produce Beta-lactamase proteins to break down penicillin-like antibiotics. Therefore, we would like to understand how Beta-lactamases function and how we can shut them down to restore the efficacy of existing antibiotics. The objective of this project is to understand the structure and dynamics of Beta-lactamase, how they contribute to the protein’s function, and how we can manipulate them to prevent Beta-lactamases from functioning.
