The ones called vsp07* are some of the oldest servers at Stanford and they take more TLC to keep them running. It's morning now at Stanford so we can hope....

I think the writing is on the wall, that these older (FahCore 0x11) WUs will not be around for too much longer. I appreciate very much that Stanford/PG have kept these WUs coming out for us, but we can't assume that this will continue for too much longer.

I was, you may recall, a bit upset about this when I first read it:

They (PG) can do anything they want. By far the easiest would be just to issue new GPU2 projects. It is just a question of allocating manpower. From PG's perspective all they need to know is if it is worth it.

Unfortunately, over time the old technology becomes less valuable as people buy into newer, more capable, video cards and slowly over time there are fewer of the older cards still being used. Looking back and supporting the old is nice to those with older technologies, but I suspect that PG is more into looking forward and seeing what those future possibilities may contain.

Sorry, but that explanation does not help those that do not wish to upgrade. I assure you, I was not happy either when GPU1 (ATI 1xxx series) was abandoned. I just moved on.

but I have come to realize that it is just part of what is required to keep the science moving forward.

Over the last 6 weeks or so, I have been replacing my older GPUs with some GTX 660 Ti OC's, I just bought 2 more yesterday (for a total of 10). Seeing these server problems over the last few days, has convinced me to finish replacing my older (pre-Fermi) GPUs entirely. So, I have just ordered six of the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 OC 1100MHZ 1GB 5.0GHZ GDDR5 GPUs. I should have them by Monday afternoon. When that is done I will have 18 GPUs folding:

• 10 - GTX 660 Ti OC (Gigabyte GV-N66TOC-2GD)
• 6 - GTX 650 OC (Gigabyte GV-N650OC-1GI)
• 2 - GTX 460 (Zotac ZT-40401-10P)

There's a chance that pre-Fermi GPUs will continue to work with a revised core_15, see http://folding.typepad.com/news/2012/12 ... ssues.html. But no guarantees are given in the blog post... anyway, I believe core_11 is getting a bit long in the tooth, viewtopic.php?f=85&t=23183&start=90#p231370 (08 Dec 2012):

I'll also look to see if we can get some of the old projects that use core_11 back up, but those were pretty much finished, although a bit more statistics is never a bad thing.

I'm guessing that the servers simply crashed, or something to that effect. I very much doubt PG would retire core_11 work this way. I presume they'd just stop issuing new core_11 WUs but still accept uploads of finished core_11 WUs.

it sure looks as if the writing is on the walls concerning the demise of the older non Fermi GPU Nvidia cards,only time will tell.

I myself choose to do Folding@home as a hobby and enjoy doing so,with that said I do not look forward to the cost of purchasing Fermi cards and may just do what I can using dual core cpu's as funds are limited on this side of the monitor.

Like I speculated in my previous (edited) post - core_11 work may be on its way out, but I wouldn't automatically jump to the conclusion that pre-Fermi folding ends when core_11 work ends.

Though I agree with the rest of you that core 11 is likely on the way out, I would hope that whenever that does happen it would be accompanied by an announcement of some kind. The fact that the WSs have stopped responding all of a sudden without such an announcement makes me think this is more likely just a technical issue. Time will tell, though. I'm just glad I replaced my 8800 gts with a 650 ti earlier this week and will be interested to learn the fate of my 9800 gtx.
