Sick of downloading problems

Post by RMouse »

Recently whenever I finish a WU, it takes enormous effort to get a new one. My computer just hands on the downloading stage. It is very very tiring. Reboots often fix it but for whatever reason, it takes a LOT of reboots. Usually I can get a new WU after 6 to 7 reboots, but now even that does not work. I am tired of rebooting my computer, simply to get a WU. So much time wasted. Here is some code. I dont know if it helps but at the end of this paste is where my computer hanged for the past 30 mins.

Code: Select all

It looks to me like a new WU is downloading for the other slot...
F@h is now the top computing platform on the planet and nothing unites people like a dedicated fight against a common enemy. This virus affects all of us. Lets end it together.

Yes, hours later it is STILL downloading.

I have run Folding at home almost nonstop for 8 months but I'm about to shut her down. Only my GPU has a WU. I am at 88 points/day. Not worth it.

If the WU takes hours to download, that is not a client issue, but a problem with your internet connection being too slow, or some other program like torrents using all the bandwidth.

If you're using a router you might want to reboot it as well as your computer.

Can you please tell us what GPU you have? If you are unsure, please post the initial section of the log which has the system configuration and F@H configuration.

Regarding the Internet speed, you might want to test it (http://www.speedtest.net/) and report your results since SMP WUs are pretty light ( few Kibs to MiBs) and according to your log, the WU size was 1.96 MBs so should take about a minute on a 256 KB DSL line (http://bandwidth.com/tools/calc.html). Moreover, can you please post more of the log since according to the log, the WU for SMP Slot was still downloading and completed 31.90% (over 3 minutes 25 seconds which is very slow for DSL connection) so what happened after that?

My internet connection is just fine. I can download movies or whatnot at very high speed. Just WU's hang.

It seems that the performance should be similar to 9300M GS (http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-Qua ... 908.0.html) so IIRC, my 9500M GS would get a few hundred points. Not sure why you are getting so low points.

My suggestion is that you set the F@H to Finish. Once the GPU finishes, uninstall F@H and select the option to remove the data files. You can then do a fresh installation of either V7.2.9 or V7.3.2 (viewtopic.php?f=87&t=23582) and see if this issue crops up again or not.

It seems to me that Slot 00 is trying to upload while Slot 01 is trying to download. As a DSL customer myself, I know that current DSL configs no longer handle this very well. I am not sure what changed, but it didn't used to be this way. Even bumping up a tier did not help, the uploads hurt the downloads currently.

If your on a 256Kb DSL line, then it's probably an uploading at the same time as downloading issue. I'm on 3Mbit and it's still a bit painful when I have one client upload while another is trying to download. Then there's the family NetFlix effect!
