Why was this core forced on us?

Because it can do things that earlier versions can't. (That would be my speculation.)

That is correct thee is no difference in work done or quality of work done between 2.22 and 2.25 and P5-133XL is correct in his statement above they did not want to maintain 2 cores. As all have seen from the fahbench scores the 5xx series of cards are actually the superior folder but there are allot of 6xx series cards that would not be able to fold if it was not for 2.25

V7 can read the boards. Why not use 2.25 on 600 and 2.22 on 500 series. Quality may be okay but quanity is lacking. The 500 series use more power and the 2.22 was much more efficient for these boards. Some wu run 20% less on 2.25. So force the core on kepler only and let fermi use 2.22?

Core versions are like WU assignments. They assign WUs in the order needed to best help the project move forward the quickest. Core versions are the same way. End of story.

Well, it looks like the unbroken run of 762x has come to an end.
The P8073s have a lower ppd on all of the hardware than the P762x WUs.

Yeah, all the 762x WUs seem to have gone now. On 807x WUs, my dual-GTX 460 rig is down 10k PPD, and my dual-GTX 660 Ti rig is down 30k PPD. But the benefit is cooler-running GPUs, my GTX 660 Ti's are running at 52C and 50C!

I'm currently folding away on 7624 and thought I'd share some irregularities about it so far.
As for specs:

GTX 670FTW
i5-3570k
Asus P8Z77-V
Windows 7 64bit

I'm currently folding on my CPU as well, but that has never impacted GPU performance (haven't tested with this wu). Right now 7624 is folding at about 5:06 TPF, and PPD for the project is about 40k (which is a 11k or so above normal).
The card is being a little funny, though. The card boosts itself to 1220ish (can't remember exactly right now) when folding other projects or gaming, and I think the voltage looks a bit funny too, but I can't remember what it is normally (haven't slept much lately, so memory isn't the best right now). Every few minutes the core clock has jumped up to 1201 (still below normal) for split seconds, and the voltage has peaked a little as well, from 1.15v to 1.162v. I started a log so I can get some more info about timing on this. This doesn't seem to be related to temperature. My card is at 65C with fan at 74%, and the card clock restrictions begin at 70C. I also changed the fan setting to test this further. Staying at 67C for a few minutes, or 63C (max fan speed, sometimes went to 62) made no difference in clock speed.
More on temps: this wu is HOT. The fan is much higher to keep 64C, currently 74%, when on 807x the fan only needs 63-66% to keep the card around 64C. That being said, the power usage of the card right now is floating between 95 and 99%, mostly staying at 97%. 807x usually use 80% (around that, don't remember exactly again).
I'm just going to assume the card is being used more efficiently, though. Muuuccchhh higher PPD (over 10k more) than 807x, the power % seems to show that the card is being used more fully, and this is all with a lower clock speed. Pretty cool.
I have a thought that the card may be downclocking since the power % is so close to 100%, where I have the target set. I might increase the power target to see what happens, but I don't want to cause any instability. I'll probably leave it alone in case anyone is extremely curious .

So I was too curious, and I did move the power target limit up. I set it to 107% (meaning max), and the card quickly shot up to 104% power, and with core clock at its normal 1215mhz and voltage at its normal 1.175. I played around with the fan a bit (after setting all other chassis fans to max--it sounds like a vacuum cleaner right now), and it seems the fan was probably the culprit and causing the card to hit the power % limit. I bet this is only a EVGA FTW thing since the card has a healthy overclock from EVGA, and maybe they just didn't calibrate fan and other card power usage well. I've OC'ed the card before, so I know it can handle the extra juice .
Oh, and TPF was improved by the clock increase. I'm now wavering between 5:00 and 5:01 (reading from HFM), so I gained around 5 seconds TPF. This got my (GPU alone) PPD up to 40.5K, which I'm pretty excited about . Probably going to lower the power limit again, though. It's too loud to think right now because of the GPU fan :/

The 762x WUs are known to run hotter than the 807x WUs. And thus draw more power as well. The smaller/quicker WUs do not seem to utilize the GPU as much and use more CPU. Maybe those are waiting for more data while its utilizing the CPU compared to the longer TPF of the 762x WUs.

PPD are also up a nice amount as well. Seems pretty normal.
