f@h causing shutdown

when running fah, my computer will just flat out turn off as if someone pulled the plug. i tried only running cpu and only running gpu to rule each out but either one results the same. cant get the computer to crash any other time even with stress tests. Only f@h. Any thoughts?

Click on Start>All Programs>FAHClient>Data Directory

There should be a file called log.txt or just log if you don't have extensions turned on.

Right click on that file and open with WordPad. Copy/paste the contents to a post here between code tags(available in Full Editor).

My first thought is that your computer is unable to sufficiently cool itself, and the motherboard is smart enough to detect this and kills the power to protect the components. This results in an instant shutdown, just as you are describing. Could be something else, but I'm thinking that is what is happening. This would make the most sense if it only occurred when both the CPU and the GPU were running full tilt, so I'm slightly puzzled because you ran only one of them at a time and still experienced the shutdown.

You can monitor your hardware temperatures using a program like Speccy.

Cooling or Power with the odds with not having enough power. A 630W power supply should be able to handle it all but some PS's are just plain crappy; It may be failing; or perhaps you are overloading a single rail.

Monitor the temps of both your CPU and video card, until you can exclude that possibility because that is free and could be a cause. It is also typically cheaper to replace fan(s) than a power supply.

I like real temp for CPU temperature monitoring and either EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner for video card temps. Setup to monitor either by log or systray.

Checked max rated temp for the card, which is 104c. The card temp doesn't go above 82c while folding full throttle. (no cpu/smp folding) and i still get the crash.

82C is quite high, even though it is below the max rated temp. This will have adverse effects on the lifetime of your GPU, as is described here:

Ever since my EVGA GTX285 card failed, I have run all of the fan controls manually, resulting in impressive temperature drops across all of my GPUs.
EVGA's "Auto" fan control was particularly bad, resulting in GPU temperatures from 85C to 95C. Switching the same EVGA card to Manual and setting the fan speed to maximum, resulted in 20C to 30C drops in temperature. So even though the card had a very well-designed cooling system, the Auto control had the temperature up to card-killing levels. I mentioned this fact to EVGA when I was getting them to replace (free of charge under warranty) my GTX285 card that had failed.
The rule-of-thumb often used is that MTBF will halve for each 10C rise in temperature.

I keep all of my GPUs running below 65C, even the ones that get the "hardest" WUs (762x). I would recommend improving the cooling (increase fan speed, improve the airflow path as much as possible) in order to increase the lifetime of your GPU. Only increase the fan speed enough to get the temp down to a reasonable value, say below 70C. Running the fan speed too high will reduce the lifetime of the fan. It's a balancing act to get the best overall result.

Ok so I managed to downclock my video card from 867Mhz to 650Mhz and from 1v to .912v I also throttled F@h back to 90% GPU usage. I let it run overnight and so far it's stable at 74C, but I think that's the best i'm going to get with my older case which doesn't circulate air too well, and stock coolers on my CPU and GPU. Still concerned that only running CPU by itself at 50% is causing a crash through because I'm pretty sure it's impossible for it to be overheating at that rate. I guess next step is to monitor CPU temp during SMP folding, no GPU and see what happens. I ran f@h on my last rig with a Quad core Phenom and an 8600GT at about 92C and it never crashed. That could only mean one of two possibilities. Either something is wrong with the client, or my last computer was set to emergency shutdown at a much higher temperature than my current computer. Thoughts?

The temperature thing was more about preventing your GPU (or CPU) from dying an early death, although elevated temps can cause memory or other faults that can crash a system.

A good temperature (and other things) monitoring program is Speccy:

The maximum temperature for an AMD Phenom II is 62C, and it's not recommended to be above 55C for stability. Other processors have different limits, so check on the values for the processor in your current system. Good luck on fixing your problem!

shows a maximum temperature of 61C, so for stability you probably want to stay below 54C.

Thats the problem, that psu is not that good. Before you kill any of your hardware I would recommend you go and buy a decent 550w-650w supply from Seasonic, corsair, enermax or Antec
