If you (have to) compare FAH v7 installation to BOINC v7 installation (on Windows)... well, OK, perhaps FAH install still needs some fine tuning, but at least FAH doesn't try to sell me the idea that I have to run it on an admin account in order to be able to crunch numbers on a GPU. That'd be like... Want to play this game after installation? admin account.

BTW, it's interesting to see according to the FAQ, FAH-v7 doesn't work under Vista...

Well, you can't have played many different games the last years if you've not met atleast one game refusing to run on non-admin account.Napoleon wrote:If you (have to) compare FAH v7 installation to BOINC v7 installation (on Windows)... well, OK, perhaps FAH install still needs some fine tuning, but at least FAH doesn't try to sell me the idea that I have to run it on an admin account in order to be able to crunch numbers on a GPU. Would guess most windows-users still uses an admin-account to log-into, since this is the easiest to do, so few users will have any problems with BOINC. For the few being affected, they can fairly easily add the needed accounts to the two groups called boinc_admins and boinc_users. Unfortunately something similar is not possible to do with games.
BTW, to get Folding@Home to work on a non-admin account, you'll need to make a shortcut to FAH-control, so both BOINC and FAH needs extra configuration to work on non-admin windows-accounts.
As for running FAH v6-CLI instead of v7, two reasons are:
1: Configuring v6 is fairly easy to do.
2: Only uploading any finished results without downloading new wu is easily done in v6.
In v7, to find-out how to do #1 for anything besides the few options available, you'll need to search-through many of the development-web-pages to finally find-out how to add any of these options. Neither FAQ, install-guide nor "client user guide" gave any useful info here.
#2 only works in v7 if you've already configured client to not start downloading next wu the moment v7-client is started, this is unlikely to be the case due to how difficult it's to configure v7 in the 1st. place.

Really? I doubt that it's OS-dependent, so I'd be surprised if it was. What browser? Internet Exploder?Rattledagger wrote:BTW, it's interesting to see according to the FAQ, FAH-v7 doesn't work under Vista...

Not true. Please provide a link to said FAQ and statement for correction. Thanks.Rattledagger wrote:...

Re: Any solid reasons for running v6?
Hmm. I just opened FAQ-V7 in Firefox 17.0.1 under Linux Mint 14, and it looked fine to me. My first thought is that you're running an older version of Firefox. Could you check the version please?Rattledagger wrote:Firefox.Jesse_V wrote:Really? I doubt that it's OS-dependent, so I'd be surprised if it was. What browser? Internet Exploder?

Where's only one FAH-related FAQ on the development-web-pages.7im wrote:Not true. Please provide a link to said FAQ and statement for correction. Thanks.

Re: Any solid reasons for running v6?
Please do post the link to that page, there are a number of out of date pages that exist on the web site that are waiting to be updated. Some are not directly linked from the current main pages, but are reachable from old URL's. Stating that it is the only FAQ on a certain page may be obvious to you, but does not necessarily give enough information to locate the page.Rattledagger wrote:Where's only one FAH-related FAQ on the development-web-pages.7im wrote:Not true. Well, I wouldn't expect to find any info about v7 from any old links, so followed the "Get Help"-link from the FAH-home-page under the 3rd. step, "Fold"...Joe_H wrote:Please do post the link to that page, there are a number of out of date pages that exist on the web site that are waiting to be updated. Re: Any solid reasons for running v6?
Dev page FAQ fixed.
The Windows Install Guide for V7, requirements section, was already very accurate in regards to Win OS support, and much more easily accessible.

Re: Any solid reasons for running v6?
Perhaps the Home page's Get Help popup could use some rearranging:
The above should have a smaller or lower profile. Most new folders probably won't care about Project Development or APIs. They would want to know how to install the software and where to get help if they have problems, but the above quote is listed before both of those links. Making Install 1st, Forum 2nd, FAQ 3rd and APIs last would probably be more helpful to the first time folder and possibly lessen confusion for some.On the Client Development Project page you can find information specific to the new v7 client, report bugs and learn about the 3rd-party development API.

Rattledagger wrote:"easily accessible" is just the thing v7 is NOT as far as information about config-options goes, if uncle fuzzy hadn't mentioned where was something like pause-on-start wouldn't have known it existed at all.7im wrote:and much more easily accessible.
BTW, apparently where is this forum-post about various config-options and how to add them, but unfortunately it's hidden-away in the archive-part of these forums meaning it's unlikely most users finds this info.
I think you are looking too much with blinders on. The install guide links in to the dev pages on multiple occasions, linking multiple dev pages and options, including the v6 to V7 config options page.
If you haven't even read the install guide, I'm not sure how much more anyone could help you find the info you were looking for.

Re: Any solid reasons for running v6?
In addition to this being untrue, I still cannot see that you have provided a link to any web page that states that this is true.Rattledagger wrote:BTW, it's interesting to see according to the FAQ, FAH-v7 doesn't work under Vista...
V7 DOES work with XP, Vista, 7, and 8.
