New Folder

Post by Lemon »

Hi, I just started folding a couple hours ago. I am using EVGA's GPU program to use my GTX 670 for folding, but it seems to be taking quite a while. Would running a second 670 in SLI speed up the folding process considerably?
I have my 670 running at 1228Mhz.

Code: Select all

Welcome to the Folding@home support forum, Lemon

Folding@home processing does take a considerable amount of time although it varies depending on the particular project that is assigned.

F@h does not make use of SLI. If you have two GPUs, you can have a different WU assigned to each of them and it doesn't matter whether SLI is enabled or not.

Depending on which project the WU is from a time per frame (TPF) of less than 9 minutes is a pretty good time. Which project is being folded? As for using a second 670 in SLI, F@H does not use SLI with the folding cores. You can add an additional card and folding slot, then be able to process two WU's at a time. Also, could you post the beginning of the log file that shows the system configuration? That can help in seeing if things are going alright.

If its the most common nv type of WU thats slow. A member of OCN with a 670 at slower clocks on a 7625 got 5:32 TPF. The other nv WUs are quicker.

Well, apparently my cpu has been the one being used for folding. When I try using the GPU 3 program, it gets stuck at Working 0/0. I would prefer to use my GPU for folding so that it won't interfere as much with my daily stuff that I do.

To fold a 6xx-series GPU you will need to use the new v7. Since you are already folding on the CPU, if you install v7 make sure to choose GPU only during the install process.

It appears the older client you are using has misidentified your GPU and you have been assigned a WU that it can not process. At one time Core 11 WU's sometimes could be folded on later cards, but current GPU's such as your 670 are assigned WU's that use Core 15.

My recommendation is that you use the current V7 folding client that can be downloaded from the Home page link at the top of the forum. It can handle folding work on both your CPU and your GPU simultaneously, negating the need to run separate clients for them. Finish up the current WU being done on your CPU and then install the V7 client.

You may be making a false assumption here.

If you're interacting with your computer, folding on a GPU may interfere with updates getting displayed on your screen, so even if the computer processes things quickly, folks do report that they experience screen lag. We can suggest some ways to compensate for that. There are wide variations in systems so possibly in your situation, you may not notice the difference but you should be aware of the possibility. It may be a few more years before GPU software can recognize task priority or to have one process interrupt another.

Your CPUs are managed by an Operating System which does recognize priority and FAH SMP or FAH for the Uniprocessor are assigned an extremely low priority so FAH can use 100% of the unused CPU resources and whatever else you want to run will immediately interrupt it, receive the processing that it's requesting, and then allow FAH to continue working.

I do have a system with two GPUs -- an old (slow) one which is dedicated to non-FAH processing and can update my screen promptly, and another more powerful one which is dedicated to FAH. Most people don't have the luxury of that sort of solution. Those who use their GPU for games will typically pause GPU folding while they are gaming.

Alright, I will finish the current task(? I'm new, so i don't know all the terms) and switch over to the V7 client. I tried that at first, but it seemed to not be making any progress after 10 minutes so i switched voer to EVGA's client, as it had shown it was actually making progress. Currently on 305000/500000 so I will probably have to switch over tomorrow morning.

The lingo is "WU" for Work Unit, which is one parcel of work which is assigned to each of your slots (That's Version 7 lingo for what was called Clients in V6).

You may have had a problem with V7, but 10 minutes is not long enough to know. Some combinations of WUs and hardware take much longer than that; others may show progress sooner than that. Take a look at the Project Summary. Notice the wide variation in the "preferred deadline" column. Everybody should see progress by the time you reach 1% of that time (most people much less than that) but note that the numbers are in days, not hours or minutes.

Alright, finished that WU. Started with v7 again and it is showing results. Currently showing 50k PPD.
