Can I contribute with this setup?

I've looked around the forum before posting but ain't had much luck getting any good search results and from what I did find it seemed like unsatisfactory results.

Let's start off with mentioning that I have a dial up connection as it's the only thing available to me, yes it's 2012 and cable or dsl internet is not down my road yet. The CPU I have is an old Pentium D 820 stock clocked at 2.80GHz and my GPU is also ancient, ATI Radeon x300.

Here let me do one better and post CPU-Z and GPU-Z screens.



I'm pretty sure the GPU is unsupported.

EDIT: Also just thought up another question. When uploading the work would it take my dial up hours to complete this?

You would use so much power in a Pentium D, for so little result, I would save up and buy a modern CPU.

The GPU is almost certainly unsupported.

The CPU... you'd get maybe a few hundred points a day. Pentium D's were basically the very budget Dual-Core CPUs... back when Dual-Cores were starting to proliferate in 2008 or so.

I would say it's definitely possible, but don't expect much more than that.

Use v6 client, in CPU mode, uplaods in minutes not hours.

As 7im notes, I'd first try 1 or 2 uniprocessor CPU clients/slots, rather than trying the SMP cores. Since it will have to wait for you to manually connect to the net for each upload/download, you run less risk of timing out on the deadline with the Uni Work Units. Also, WU packages and results are generally much smaller.

I don't think you have to avoid the v7 client. Just realize from the start that you have to override the default to get a uniprocessor Work Unit instead of the SMP WU. It's only a matter of checking a different box. Then, if you decide to try running a second CPU core, it's easier to add a second slot in the v7 client than to add an entire new v6 config.

Pentium D 820 2.8Ghz is good for about 800 ppd with a pass key.
I have a couple of those here and that's what they get on Win 7 using V7.

Please note the context of the response, both post and author. It was suggested that the donor would have to wait for a connection. And as I said, not in v6. You don't have to wait. The client will dial out. You don't have to wait if the client does it for you.
