I decided to contribute PC time rather than money for cancer (or whatever) research for the opposite reason. There are a lot of fundraisers out on the streets. High school or college kids do it a lot, which is a great thing, but I have no idea where the money goes and how efficiently it is used. But there are relatively few people who have the knowledge to contribute computer time, so that should be the more efficient way to give. And I have the premises and a cool basement, which saves Stanford a lot of housing and maintenance costs. But if that is not the most efficient way to do it, then the whole distributed computing paradigm comes into question. It is possible at some point, as the cost of super-computers come down, that it will in fact be more efficient for them to do it on campus. When that time comes, just let me know.
