Nvidia 296.10 WHQL drivers fail

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

It is entirely possible that you don't have to choose between crashing Folding and destroying your card. You might get both with the new drivers.

Strange coincidence, but it might just be a coincidence ...

Did anyone with 296.10 drivers noticed weird behavior of the GPU fan that might explain the failure reported at nVidia forums ?

toTOW is right, more serious problems with the drivers have already occurred in the past !

To solve the problem it is easier to turn off the monitor with the button...simple and effective.

On the other side it is sad to see that nvidia does not react more quickly to fix this problem :-(

I think it is wonderful that you are willing to relieve Nvidia of their responsibilities to fix their drivers, but I do question whether you realize that at least part of the problem is in the CUDA implementation, and may be carried over to the Kepler drivers too. But it could start a trend on the Internet of finger exercises to prepare you to buy Nvidia cards.

EDIT:
The problem has been noted at GPUGRID as well,
http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=2829

and also the various other ones running on BOINC.
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/f ... ,40#369525

For a Fermi card, I can always go back to an earlier version that works. But what if you buy a Kepler card and the first version has the bug? You probably can't drop back to an earlier version there. Hopefully Nvidia will fix it and this will be an academic question. But if you are planning on buying Keper, I would get on the Nvidia forums and start complaining.

I'm getting a similar problem as well. I can fold fine for hours, but after an overnight fold, I always wake up to find that my GPU client failed and the only way to fix it is to restart the FAHClient..

If your machine only fails at night, it's because you have your power-saving software set to "Turn off monitor" That's a known bug. Change it to "always on" and use the power switch until a driver version is released that fixes this problem. Did you even read this topic before posting?

I had to revert to the cuda driver 4010 also. Using 295 and 296 drivers caused the GPU client to finish processing the unit, but the server always rejected the results. I have the screen set to always on, and power the monitor off when not using the computer. This happened several times using different drivers, and only stabilized with the older 4010 cuda driver.

Keep up the good work and folding. I look forward to the next iteration of the code.

sorry if this has been already mentioned somewhere, but I am completely new to nvidia folding or even nvidia GPUs and especially their drivers.
I just received EVGA GT 430 1Gb gpu and would like to drive me crazy with that miniature fan while folding. So what drivers should I install which would not fail me straight away? :D thanks

The 290.53 beta drivers will work fine with the GT 430; I have folded on that card with it myself. Or the 285.62 WHQL drivers will work. It is only the 295 and 296 drivers that have this particular bug. Some of the earlier drivers may work too, but it is hit or miss there. Sometimes they have other problems.

I am folding with the same driver and is working fine. I have a GT430. for the GT240 and in general all series all the way up and including all 400 series I would recommend 260.99, very nice experience with it and I would strongly recommend. No lagging desktop while you fold with them.

I installed 290.53 on my card and it is folding. its my secondary system, so cannot say anything about lags or anything else. So refreshing to have a card which let's you use all cores of your cpu :D

I hope readers agree that this is the most appropriate place to report that I too have problems with 296.10 drivers, but perhaps a little different from others who have posted here. My problem is that at seemingly random points throughout the day different projects hang reporting 99.99% completion in the status tab of the client, although the log tab shows a much lower (and different each time) % completed. I have to quit the client and restart it perhaps 6 times a day. The CPU folding seems to be working well. Images exemplifying the problems are at:

I advise that the performance of NVIDIA cards, do not let the drivers.

Programs developed by manufacturers, are far superior in both effectiveness as friendliness. I control the voltage, temperature curve fan, speed, profiles, and more.

My cards are EVGA, then use the "PRECISION X", also from EVGA.

As for the monitor off, Win7, always lit and the whole system at peak performance. I turn off the monitor when I want.
Sorry for the translation. This aspect, obliges me to very short and concrete sentences. Little by little he will go forward, also in this field.

Well I have had problems with F@H and the 296.10 Drivers and had Full power and no screensaver the WU's would Fail at the last 99%.. I DL'd and installed the new Betas and they seem to be working fine..

So the 296.10 Drivers just seem problematic
