Need help... GPU folding keeps crashing.

Hi guys,

I've been folding a bit with the old client, but new to client 7 and gpu folding.

I've just assembled a new rig to do folding. Intel i7 2700k with 2 x MSI N560GTX-Ti 448 Twin Frozr III PE/OC.

I've downloaded the latest nvidia drivers from nvidia website. the latest version : 296.10

i'm running win7 64 bit

I've downloaded FAh client 7.1.52

During installation, it selected the GPU and SMP for me. Selected default values for all.

After starting, SMP 8 started folding, but GPU 0 and GPU 1 were showing Ready.

After a while, it became red (GPU 0 and 1).

A check on the log, it keeps crashing.

I suspect that's your issue. Lately some of the newer drivers haven't been working well with F@H.

Is the GPU overclocked? Try running at stock speeds and see if that works. Then work your way up to a stable speed.

In another thread someone (I believe it was Bruce) gave a hint that worked for me:

Go to the energy saving options of Win 7 and set the value for "turn monitor off" to "never" (Please note that I don't know the exact description in English as I have a German Win 7). It's not nice but it seems currently the only solution to use current nvidia WHQL drivers for folding. The new energy saving mode is called "turn your monitor manually off" :wink:

You don't need to downclock your GPU. My 560 Ti is factory overclocked and it works.

hmm.. strange ... i've turned off the "auto monitor off" feature. still it fails. I've tried downgrading the drivers to 295.73, but it fails to. I tried downgrading it again to 285.62 but it says that the driver is not compatible with my card. So, i'm stuck in 295.73.

Yes, my card is factory pre-OC. I don't know how to set it back to original.

The GPU folding starts from the beginning after i installed win7, drivers and folding client. so, i doubt it's the temp. I checked it, it was about 31C on one card, and the other was 39C.

Any more suggestions?

what do you mean by system section of the log file?

is it this one? i got it in the log directory. (This is one of the few logs)

Please also note, GPU slots will not fold when the client is setup to run as a service. Microsoft prevents this. This is not a client issue.

Got it, i'm running on the "recommended value" ... the one with FAHControl. Is that one ok?

Swell. :mrgreen:

Letting Windows bootup and log in with a user before starting FAH allows CUDA to fully initalize, which then allows FAH to use CUDA in folding.

hmm.. after installing CUDA toolkit 4.1 with typical installation... still no luck :(

CUDA is still not detected.

win service is true... but i'm not running it as service....??

I used the GPU-Z, the CUDA is checked....

btw, just a note. I'm in the office now, i use logmein to remotely connected to the pc at home. Will this give a problem?

Yes, likely the problem. Remote connections often substitute their own video setup to compress the data. Saw this same problem just last week. ;)

VNC is known to work. Remote Desktop usually does not work. IIRC, LMI fails as well.

Reboot the machine when you are done with LMI, and fah should come back up and run normally. Let it run for a while. Then go back in with LMI. The log should show folding progress. ;)

Followed the instructions, seems like not working. It's showing READY for GPU0 and GPU1.

Do i need to enter any switches? like -forcegpu or something?

you could add "client-type" of "advanced" to the slot options, but shouldn't be necessary.

Good news.... Last night, after i reached home from work, i re-format and re-install win7-64bit. Installed the drivers from the MSI cd - 285.66 and installed the folding client v7. CUDA was detected... folding started since then :)
I didn't even have to install cuda toolkit.

I'm not sure why, earlier, cuda was not detected. Maybe nvidia latest drivers has problem? or maybe i choosed custom during installation of folding client? ... but i didn't change anything though... everything was with default value. .. after installation, cuda was not detected, and it was saying that i'm running as win32 service..., which was wrong. I was using the Fah Control... hmm strange
