How do I uninstall?

Post by nysanman »

I have grown extremely frustrated with fah over the last 2 months. For some reason it has ceased to work. I have no idea why. I have tried installing new versions but as far as I know it simply created a second version without replacing the first and it will still not work. I need to remove all traces of it to try a clean install. If that fails I will give up. Which totally annoys me. My team and I were making great progress in moving up the ladder stat-wise and we were proud of that. Now, thanks to my non-contributions over the last 2 months we have been dropping like a stone. Last chance. How and where do I find all the pieces on my computer to remove them all. I am running a Macintosh with OS 10.6.7. Also, why is it that every time I got a new computer, installed the program, and registered I was seen as a new user? I am presently showing on my team (36209) as NYSanMan 3 separate times and NYSanMan1 once. They should all be the same NYSanMan. How can I consolidate all 4 names into one?

Which version(s) of folding do you need to uninstall? I have posted directions for removing various versions on the Mac V6 and public beta forums and can provide additional directions if needed. I can post a link to the post with appropriate directions. Please post the beginning of the log file as that can provide path information on where to look for components, especially if not installed in the normal locations. The log file information can also help identify configuration issues keeping you from folding.

As to why your contributions show up under several entries, I can only surmise there was some variation in how the name was entered that is not obvious. It has to be exact, extra spaces or differences in capitalization will be seen as a different user. They do not combine stats once earned by a Pande Group policy for folding.

Once the old install(s) are gone, we can help you get folding installed correctly.

Extra spaces and capitalization ar two reasons. A third one is if you use an email address. the @ and everything after it does not display for anti-spam reasons but it's still part of the registered name.

Stick with v6 running the -advmethods flag. Hopefully someone at the PG keeps feeding that client work till they get v7 sorted (guessing you are frustrated with the beta, v6 is totally stable imho)

Hello. I am running (?) version OSX10.5-6.29.3. I have no idea what you mean by "Please post the beginning of the log file...". What and where is the log file that I could copy and paste the beginning of it? As far as my personal contributions showing up under several entries - all three names are listed exactly the same - NYSanMan, with the 4th showing as NYSanMan1 (I believe at that time, as I tried to assign my name I was told that NYSanMan was already in use and I had to select a different name. My team number is 36209 if you can access it you can see what I'm talking about.

To post part of the log file, it is located in a folder named Folding@home in the Library folder of the account you use to run folding. You can open it using TextEdit. Copy from there and post the log's beginning between "Code" tags using the full editor for posting.

Since you have the 6.29.3 version installed, here are the directions on removing it:

1. Disable folding using the Folding@home control panel in System Preferences.

2. Run the Terminal app from the Utilities folder and enter the following commands:

cd /usr/local/fah
./uninstall.sh

You will be prompted for your password, the script should remove the component files.

3. That leaves the work directories, remove the Folding@home folder from the Library folder in the account you use to fold to complete the uninstall.

As for the name used, that is what you enter into the control panel in your System Preferences. As mentioned it has to be an exact match entered there, for example these versions of "Joe" are all considered different usernames - Joe, JOE or joe. Without the logs from the different times represented in the stats report for the 3 different NYSanMan entries, we can not give an explanation for the separate entries. And yes I have looked to see the four different entries in your team stats. You do not need to get a new username from the folding download site each time you install.

When you reinstall folding, if you have removed the Folding@home folder from your Library folder, then you will have to re-enter your configuration. In the Folding@home control panel enter your username, team number and passkey on the preferences tab. Under the Advanced tab add the parameters -advmethods and -smp to the "Extra parameters" line. The -advmethods gives your OS X folding client access to more work that is available, and the -smp is insurance that parameter is set for your client installation. Then you can start the client folding.

Good luck with your folding, post if you have questions.
