AMD announces the Shanghai, a 12-core processor

Post by Catsceo »

Linky.

Really exciting! I hope it runs fast with all of those cores...

My main question is, would the SMP F@H client be able to handle all of these cores?

Hardware configuration: FX8320e (6 cores enabled) @ stock,
- 16GB DDR3,
- Zotac GTX 1050Ti @ Stock.
- Gigabyte GTX 970 @ Stock
Debian 9.

Running GPU since it came out, CPU since client version 3.
Folding since Folding began (~2000) and ran Genome@Home for a while too.
Ran Seti@Home prior to that.

So its basically an intel chip, but with more cores, probably an integrated memory controller, and will do more work than anything intel currently offers, at the same time.

I'll buy one. :D

Too bad F@H only supports 8 cores, for now.
I fold with: 9800GX2, 8800 GS, 1,3GHz Athlon and 1,8GHz Athlon 64
I BOINC with: Q6600 2,4GHz and Athlon X2 2,2GHz

Run 3 SMP clients (4 cores each)

We've got projects scaling to 200 cores (8-core boxes connected with DDR infiniband) with a new version of Gromacs, so 12-cores should not be a problem once we have that new version in FAH -- we're looking forward to it!
