Re: Active clients
Well, that machine has submitted some results from MachineID=4, then, and has discontinued doing so. As I said earlier, I don't know how that happened without your knowledge.

Re: Active clients
I'm totally sure nothing been changed for a long time, as a matter of fact thinking about it I'm sure it was when I entered the passkey, which would be soon after they became available upon installing/upgrading to smp2. If I had changed machineID surely I would not have started this thread. I already knew changing machineIDs cause this to happen, I found that out in 2009 when I started folding.

No I have not changed machine# . This all started about a month ago, when my active client changed from 1 to 2. Then after a week the 7 day (active client) dropped back to 1 client then after 24Hrs changed to 2 again, it,s been constantly reading 2 clients for 3 weeks now. No changes to any settings/configuration .
Cheers,
erphy100.
PS. I,ve just noticed the 7 day client# has dropped back to 1, lets see if it lasts, should have looked before I started this post.
This has happened again, the 7 day active clients has increased from 1 to 2.The only thing appearing the same as before is that its on project 75xx. This happened yesterday 24/07/11. Mybe the server handing out these projects 7500 & 7501, are causing this issue or even the projects themselves.
Cheers,

Re: Active clients
You do have two clients running on the same machine. The following have been returned recently
2011-07-24 22:09:17 UTC, Project: 7500 Run 0 Clone 29 Gen 173 (assigned to MachineID=4 at: 2011-07-24 14:09:03)
2011-07-25 10:09:06 UTC, Project: 6997 Run 0 Clone 84 Gen 116 (assigned to MachineID=2 at: 2011-07-25 02:59:10)
Both are SMP projects. Are you saying that you only processed one of these WUs? (I'm not sure what happened between 2011-07-24 22:09:17 and 2011-07-25 02:59:10. Perhaps you can tell us by posting your logs.) Is more than one copy of a FahCore_xx running?
Perhaps you have started one client as a service and are running another one interactively. Perhaps you are starting the same client with two different shortcut settings.
Can you find both copies of FAHlog.txt? If not, which of the two does not appear in your FAHlog.txt? Please post whatever you find covering that overall time period. It may also be called FAHlog-Prev.txt.

Re: Active clients
Thanks for the link. I've tried to find the other client without any luck as yet. I've looked in remove/add programs, all the f@h folders & used search, no luck. When I installed the SMP2, I had to have a few goes before it worked ok. I deleted the first few atempts, do you think I left something somewhere, I deleted the shortcut then went to remove/add programs & deleted from there I had a good look & everything appeared to have gone. Do you think something got left I did'nt find thats causing this. Its not a big problem for me if I can't find it I'll just wait untill I need to reinstall my o/s that will clear the little devil out.
Thanks for all your time & sorry for putting you all to so much trouble.

Re: Active clients
Is there any possibility that your OS was cloned (such as with Norton Ghost) and that it's running somewhere else? You are submitting results from more than one IP address, but that's not unusual since many ISPs use DHCP dynamic addressing.
One place you may not have looked: In Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services look for something starting with "Folding@home..." or "FAH..." or something like that.

Re: Active clients
Hi bruce,
I'm sure my o/s has not been cloned, it was purchased with the PC from a well known PC company in the uk.My network uses DHCP to provide its addresses. I've also looked in
Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services. All I found folding related was MPICH process manager. Nobody has had access to my PC o/s. I've never even heard of Norton ghost, always thought that Nortons was a sort of anti-virus only.
thanks,
erphy100.

Re: Active clients
The MPICH process is no longer used by FAH-SMP so that service can be permanently stopped if you wish, though that's not particularly important.
You never answered my question about how many copies of FAHCore_xx you see running. With one client, it should be a maximum of one.

Re: Active clients
You should probably also upgrade to a supported level client, v6.3x, available on the client download page, under High Performance clients.

Re: Active clients
Like erphy100, I have noticed an unexpected increase of the number of my Active clients in the past couple of months, usually doubling my 2 to 4 (though it was 3 a couple of days ago).
Unlike erphy100, I am running 2 dedicated Linux machines each with 1 v6.34 SMP client (yes, I have verified this).
Details machine 16:
Username: GTron (Team 0)
User ID (masked): 37xxxxxxxxxxxxD1
Machine ID: 5
Passkey present
Details machine 17:
Username: GTron (Team 0)
User ID (masked): 76xxxxxxxxxxxx7C
Machine ID: 5
Passkey present
As these are dedicated folders, they are rarely touched and I certainly have made no changes to FAH configurations since Feb 25. I have verified the Passkeys are identical and the logs since Feb 25 show no changes to my username, team, user ids, or machine id. The version of FahCore_a3.exe automatically updated from 2.22 to 2.27 on March 3 on both machines.
The only thing I can think of, aside from a purely server side problem, is that there have been a few power outages this summer and that the client and/or core are not recovering the passkey properly when restarting the client mid-WU. Prof. Pande has indicated passkeys have impacted the rankings on the Stanford stats pages, perhaps they impact the active client count as well -- leading to a situation where an improperly recovered passkey would be interpreted server side as a different passkey and be treated as a different client therefore change the active client count. (I do not monitor my points so closely that I would detect a deficiency from not getting a bonus on the occasional WU.)
This would not explain different machine IDs in the stats server side unless machine IDs are manipulated to provide passkey confidentiality. It would seem significant that it is impacting both Windows and Linux clients.
I can provide logs back to Feb 25 for both machines, if anyone insists (they are about 3.6MB each -- not sure how well they would post).
Folding On,
Greg
