Stream processors

Post by anandhanju »

Was trying to read up on the heart and soul of GPUs when I came across these links in Wikipedia that pointed to other research projects at Stanford in the stream processor area.

Imagine - http://cva.stanford.edu/projects/imagine/
Merrimac - http://merrimac.stanford.edu/

Does the GPU code or its cousin work on these systems? Do you plan on stress testing these systems, oh for a few years or so?

Well, Imagine doesn't have the required floating point capabilities and Merrimac doesn't actually exist as a physical processor, so no. Also, there is a pretty large difference between modern GPUs and these true stream processors. While a GPU can emulate a stream processor, it is quite different in design as compared to Imagine/Merrimac and even Cell.

Ah. A pity. Thanks for your reply.

BTW, how many times a day do you hear the phrase "Houston, we have a problem"?
