Spelling errors in FAH Exec Summary pdf

Post by dEhiN »

Hi all, I've started folding again after a few months of stopping it. The good news is I now have a brand new hexa-core which I am folding on! Yay! Anyway, I was reading the executive summary pdf and noticed that it has several spelling errors (2-3 that I recall). I think the idea of the exec summary is great, and I plan to present it to my dad, who deals with the IT resources at his work place. However, could someone who has the authority peruse the exec summary and correct the few mistakes in it? Thanks.
God bless

I only found one wrong spelling on the exec summary... "referencs" in the 2nd to last paragraph.

If you would be kind enough to point out the rest, I'll be sure they get corrected. Thanks.

1) "Folding@Home is based at Stanford University and Stanford University Medical School and is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation"
Should that be National Institute of Health? Or are there more than one institutes involved in the funding?

2) "When proteins misfold, they can clump together ("aggregate"). These clumps can often gather in the brain, where they are believed to cause the symptoms of Mad Cow or Alzheimer's disease."
Grammatically, it should read "Mad Cow or Alzheimer's diseases". It's a minor point, but if we're going for professional, then might as well go all the way.

3) "Here's a report on computer power management from Lawrence Berkeley government labs, and there are other referencs on the web you can find."
As 7im pointed out, references has been misspelled.

4) "If the signatures don't match (on either the input out the output) the client will throw away the data and start again."
The bracketed part should read "on either the input or output".

That's all I can find - the rest looks pretty good.

I am curious as to the original purpose in writing this executive summary. Who was its intended audience - consumers/residents or businesses (or both)?

Business owners, IT managers, etc. Executive types. ;)

Plural "institutes" is correct usage. Eh, I didn't name it. ;) http://www.nih.gov/

#2 could go either way gramatically. Depends on your view of proper names. Is it just "Mad Cow" or "Mad Cow disease" ? Whereas AD typically includes the word disease in common usage.

If we add the s, let's change it to an and... "Mad Cow and Alzheimer's diseases"

But also, if we fix #2, we should probably add an s to the last word in both the first and second paragraphs. ;)
Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's diseases.
Actually, the 2nd "diseases" is redundant, and should be dropped at Parkinson's.
This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related diseases.
Also depends on your definition usage here. disease as in abnormal condition, or diseases, as in those actual malladies listed.

Otherwise, I'm good with fixing #3 and #4.

That's fair - my #2 point could go either way.

As for asking about the audience, I was just thinking that at some points the current summary strays from aiming to reach executive types. No offense to the person(s) who wrote the current exec summary - I think they did a wonderful job - but tone-and-tense-wise, the summary switches a lot between written and spoken English.

Do you mind if I try my hand and re-writing the summary? I'll use what is there as a template, and I'll submit whatever I come up with for approval.

Let me know what you think of this suggestion.

The document was created 7 years ago. The general idea of fah hasn't changed much in that time, but maybe the sophistication of the targeted audience has changed. ;)

I can't promise they'll use any of your submitted work, but if you're willing to take a stab at it, please do.
