Beer-Thirty, just ramblin'...
I watched a YouTube video of a large group of folk gathered at a CompUSA where Team AMD dialed up a PC to ~7ghz on liquid helium (uh... virgins do the craziest things!).
It got me to thinking about a FAH tourney.
Las Vegas. Bring one rig. Get Intel, AMD, nVidea, EVGA, etc, to foot the bill. Tax write-off if FAH is non-profit.
Neon Lights, Slots, Overclocking, Alcohol, Luck of the Draw.
There might even be a casino receptive to the idea.
Plug it in, new Username, 48 hours to make points. Would have to get the FAH crew to kill the 10 unit SMP limit for the tourney, or have pre-setup "qualified" usernames. WU's fall where they may, that's where luck comes in. Go graphics? Go BigAdv? Go Both? Overclock how much?
Have classes: Single Core CPU. 2-8 cores. 9-24. Unlimited. Best AMD. Best Intel. Best Graphics.
Might even be fun just to check out some serious PC's at full throttle while enjoying the Vegas Experience?
And it could generate Press for FAH.
And do a Good Deed.
Heck, folk race Bar Stools, so why not?

Re: FAH Tournament?
A few of the top ranked teams do have a bit of a competition once a year. It's called the Chimp Challenge. It's not a live event, like you're suggesting, but we do have some lively interactions along the way and make it a fun thing to do. The individual aspect of your idea is interesting too. Other than small challenges within each team, I have not seen this done. There would have to some sort of limitations on hardware, or classifications for different levels of folding. It just wouldn't be fair to see an OC'd SR-2 with 4-580s going up against a stock P4 with any GPU you want to select. The biggest key in competitions is to make them fair, so anyone entered has a chance of winning.
Just had a thought as I was typing that. Maybe everyone gets set up on a bunch of identical rigs that have been tested out and verified working stable, and they don't know what they will be folding on until they walk in the door. Then it's up to the competitors to figure out which clients they want to run to maximize PPD and they can install priority and affinity monitoring programs if they wish. So, they've been given equal footing, and it's up to their ability to optiimize and the luck of the wu draw as to who comes out on top.
Can I trademark that idea?

Stock and Super Stock?
Get someone like HP on board to provide identical chassis.
Stock means you have 1 hour from the keyboard to prepare. BIOS is locked.
Super Stock gives you the same 1 hour but you have a Mobo with overclock abilities.

Re: FAH Tournament?
I was thinking about the OC thing too, but there is so much variability from one board and chip combination to the next, even when both are from the same manufacturer, there would have to be a lot of testing done on them in advance to ensure everybody is in fact starting with an equal footing (equal ability of the hardware to be OC'd).
Re: FAH Tournament?
Some of it is just blind luck.
I race on weekends, and any good racer knows that "some days you eat Bear, and other days the Bear eats you".
All forms of competition have a luck factor.
And in the end, everybody wins, because FAH helps everyone.
But let's be honest. Folk wanna see the Insane Setups. SuperStock might show talent, but Top Fuel shakes the ground.

You left out gambling! Shouldn't people be betting on how many point each team will get?Qinsp wrote:Neon Lights, Slots, Overclocking, Alcohol, Luck of the Draw.
