GTS 450 failing to record

Post by collinf »

Am looking for some help, I have had various problems getting a new GTS 450 card to run correctly.

With help from the forum I appear to have got it running. In the log file all the details appear to be correct, work is carried out submitted and the "Thank you for the work" message from Stanford all seems in order. However nothing is being added to my personal stats, I would have expected my PPD to have jumped by at least 10,000 by other results I have seen, also for example it still says "6 clients active" adding the GTS should have brought it back up to 7. I am running the -advmethods flag as I have been advised to do. Some further assistance here would be good. Log file included.

Re: GTS 450 failing to record

There is something very "wrong" about this post. You see you have stated that you are using GTS 450 (Fermi) GPU but the FAHlog shows a Non-Fermi GPU that is folding FahCore_11 WU which isn't possible since Fermi GPUs cannot fold FahCore_11 WUs. So can you please clarify what is happening?

Hi, thanks for the response. I downloaded the GPU3 Fermi client, before installing I deleted all folding at home clients and shortcuts as advised in Stanfords instructions. I also updated my Nvidia drivers to 260.89. I then ran the new instal and that is when my problems started, I know the viewer is not 100% but all I was getting was "Core is not running now" I also had some problems with an old fire wall product which I have since removed. This had been preventing me from uploading and downloading work from Stanford. I was advised to use the -forcegpu nvidia_fermi flag and all seemed to be ok work was being done uploaded and accepted but not awarded to me. In the viewer my team name and number were there and you could see the work progressing but still no points awarded to me. I was then advised to use the -advmethods flag. The result of this is for the viewer to say "Core is not working now" But in the log file work is being done.

To be honest I am getting very confused with this, I have in the past just plugged in a card and off we go, so all the help I am getting is most welcome

Please avoid the viewer as it is buggy/resource hog. You can use FahMon/HFM.NET from here.

Can you please run GPU-Z and post a screenshot? The most important information is the "Name" so please tell us what it is. It could be possible that you are running a GTS 250 (non-Fermi) instead of GTS 450 (Fermi) since the FAHlog is indicating that your GPU is a Non-Fermi one:
[11:53:46] Gpu type=2 species=30.

If it was a Fermi, it should have been:
[11:53:46] Gpu type=3 species=X.

I would suggest that you upgrade to the latest GPU BETA Client v6.40r1 (viewtopic.php?f=59&t=16471#p163637) which detects the GPU's compute capability. If you want further information, please read my GPU Guide (link in signature).

BTW, just to clarify, your issue is that your F@H Points aren't being credited under your username, right? If so please post the starting of the FAHlog and the section where it uploads the WU. (If you can't judge it, just post the entire thing and we can will find the relevant details)

The forcegpu flag may be an important part of your problem. Whenever you use that flag, you're taking full responsibility for knowing exactly what hardware you have. PantherX's speculation that you might have a GTS 250 (non-Fermi) instead of GTS 450 (Fermi) is an important question.

If you DO have Fermi hardware, you have to use the GPU3 client, not the GPU2 client that you appear to be using. If you're running the older GPU2 client, the forcegpu flag that you're using is going to be ignored because that client does not support the Fermi hardware. In any case, it should not be necessary to use the forcegpu flag to bypass the hardware recognition software that's in the new client.

Is it possible that you have two clients running? One writing information to the log showing it's running and another saying it's not running?

Points were reported to the stats database for this GPU work unit.

Hi cauliflower1 (team 35947),
Your WU (P6603 R6 C171 G452) was added to the stats database on 2010-11-02 05:12:05 for 450 points of credit.

The CPU client running on this same Athlon computer also reported work earlier today. p11266 r2 c399 g10

Hi all, many thanks for all the assist. My GTS 450 is now running very well. Yesterday my PPD jumped from 11000 to 18000 all in all I am very pleased with this. I will now get a couple of clients (That I have neglected) back on and I hope to be doing 20000 PPD. Once again thank you for all the help.
