Slow internet connection while results upload [Needs QoS?]

Post by mattsdaddy »

When the GPU3 client completes the unit, the connection slows to a crawl on all networked computers while the program tries to upload the results. Is there anything that can be done to reduce the bottleneck?

Its been noted quite a few times around the forums that F@H updating can consume a significant proportion of a user's upload capacity, particularly if the user has a slow connection. For me personally, all my other traffic comes to a complete stop, though this is exacerbated by the friendly traffic management policies of my ISP..!

If you have a modem/router that supports QOS, then you can configure that to put F@H at a lower priority to your other traffic (although I'm not 100% how effective this is because the traffic is generally on the 80/8080 port? (which is the same as http traffic)). On a sub-vista computer, you can have a look at getting a traffic management programme called netlimiter - it allows you to set how much bandwidth particular programmes are allowed to use. Unfortunately, it doesn't work on Win7 machines and I don't think it's that flash with Vista machines either.

There may be a linux traffic management solution as well (because Linux is just awesome), but I haven't spent any time looking at that.

With my router ( DLink Dir-655) I instituted QOS successfully by explicitly specifying all the folding server IP addresses rather than depending upon ID'ing the application or the port. I just gave all the folding server IP addresses a very low priority. while it was not perfect, it did allow real-time internet gaming with just a small lag penalty (.05 seccond) while folding uploaded. Without the QOS settings the lag was on the order of 10 seconds which is totally unplayable.

This was with Comcast as my internet provider.

Although this was specifically reported as an issue for GPU3, I believe it is equally an issue for all clients. I'm going to move the topic to a general forum rather than limit it's exposure to those who are following the GPU3 topic. I'm also going to add QoS to the title, since that seems to be the main tool to solve this.

As far a I've seen, this is a problem in all v6 clients as well as in all prior versions. (I do know that this problem has been reported numerous times before.) From the information available about V7, I think it's fair to assume that it's one of the features that will be "easier to include" (i.e.- not part of "the first versions" which will not have everything that donors have asked for), but at least there's room for hope.

And btw, some folks have claimed success with NetLimiter (Windows) too.
