New PC advice - E5200

Post by Bikerz »

Ok, just got given a PC to fold on. Its a E5200 stock clock 2.51Ghz, has a frezzer 7 pro. Il try and clock it a bit, have 2gb DDR2 Geil RAM. GFX is a ATI thing (non fan heatsink).

Il try my best with clocking it but questions for you guys is

What clients shall I run and which OS? XP on at min, shall I just do a fresh install or change to windows 7? 32bit as only 2gb RAM or 64bit? I presume just fold on CPU as GPU will be pointless and just create heat and knock my E5200 clock back. What temp or voltage would you let you CPU run at folding 24/7?

Cheers

If you plan to fold 24/7 then you may want to consider the SMP2 Client. If you plan to use the PC for daily usage, then 2 instances of UNI will do the job. Windows 7 32 bit unless you have plans to upgrade to 4+ GB of memory.

F@H Clients will work fine on Windows 7 without any problems.

A good quality motherboard will handle all the voltages of the CPU and from my experience, I can easily OC without changing the voltages to 3.2GHz. Normally, CPU temps under 70C are perfect. 80C-70C needs monitoring. 90C+ is dangerous.

Just use -smp and it will use what you have, unless you want less, but that wouldn't work with a duo.
Have fun!
Oh the gpu doesn't sound very positive.

Use both at present to get the A3 units, other wise you are limited to A1s only and (hopefully) they are almost finished.

Not to forget that the a3 WUs give you bonus points. But in your case, there might be lower the the normal expected value. Nonetheless, you have to configure the client using the passkey, and return 10 a2/a3 WUs before you are qualified for the bonus point system.

Do note that FahMon doesn't yet support the bonus point system, only HFM.net and FAHSPY does.

Also -advmethods flag means that you will be getting WUs in the advance beta stage just before they go public. Thus you chance of getting WUs that EUE are higher. From my personal experience, I have folded over 30 WUs none EUE but you may get 1 EUE out of every 50 WUs that you have done.

There is a known issue with a3 core where the progress of the WU slows down in a non-linear manner if it is being interrupted while processing the WU. PG is working on a solution for this and hopefully, will be fixed soon.

If you are going to smp fold, your really need a Passkey and the following additional parameters -smp -advmethods -verbosity 9.

The passkey allows you to get bonus points
-smp specifies that you will be using multiple cores
-advmethods expands the choice of WU's to include A3 WU's
-verbosity 9 maximizes the amount of information written to the log files so that if there is an issue it is easier to diagnose the problem.

Yes, there is a space between each parameter.
