You may be the first person to do a shutdown a FAH service while a ProtoMol WU was running. In fact, ProtoMol seems to do a good job of checkpointing when you use a CTRL-C (console) or a ContextMenu Quit (systray client) but there's a pretty good chance that that combination of events never came up during ProtoMol testing.

The server did not receive a result from you, so the WU will pass the deadline and be reassigned. I have no reason to suspect that there's anything wrong with the WU itself.

Going from the log it seems just to have deleted the WU and then downloaded it again from 129.74.85.48
So we'll try again.

I received one of these Guru Meditation messages yesterday too, where the client shutdown and deleted itself while I was at work, when I go home today I will search for the log.

Guru Meditation errors mean that the files on disk don't match what the core wrote. There are a number of ways this could happen:

1) Some other software on your system makes a change to one of the core's data files.
2) The core or OS dies without saving all its data to disk. This should not happen if the core is shutdown nicely. I.e. not killed hard.
3) The core is writing to a network disk and the data does not all get written before the system shutsdown. Windows is notoriously bad about network file consistency.

If the core is not shutdown properly we cannot guarantee you will get credit because there is no way to tell the difference from this and someone tampering with the results. In such cases the results are invalid and useless if they are not stored correctly anyway. Faulty hardware or operating systems are not our fault.

However, if the client is having this problem under normal circumstances or normal soft shutdowns then we need to fix this. If you can show me evidence of this I definitely want to see it.

We have done quite a bit of work debugging core stop and restart issues. The ProtoMol core is much stricter about corrupted data where past cores might have just accepted it and moved on.

Just be aware that if the core is shutdown hard then you may loose the points.

Client is set at default interval of 15 minutes.

At time of shutdown checkpoints are about 13 minutes apart.

Yes, there's apparently a bug but you didn't tell us what kind of filesystem is involved so it still could be either the FAH code or your OS. Jcoffland mentioned the example of a Windows network disk but that's not the only one. While many popular filesystems will periodically sync data to harddisk (within your "about 5 minutes" timeframe), there are also a number which won't.

Just be aware that if the core is shutdown hard then you may loose the points.

All the more reason for better and multiple checkpoints.

Filesystem is NTSF, default for XP Pro x64.






The client is in a folder on D. The working files are on E, with a separate folder for each CPU core.

I think this might be a bug. We are beta testing version 23 which implements a more robust checkpointing. For reasons of client availability, we have tested it more on linux. It might be that somehow in Windows things are not working out as expected - the checksumming is carried out by the C++ Boost iostream libraries, and there might be a problem related to that. We will look into this. Thanks for pointing it out!
