Multiple Passkeys for one user - Good? Bad? Does not matter?

Post by parkut »

With SMP2 and the introduction of bonus points, tied to the requirement of having a passkey, I can't help but notice there are a lot of questions. I have not seen this one answered yet.

Long ago, my team wanted to increase our rankings by buying and sending complete systems to be used as dedicated crunchers to members that would agree to maintain them and provide power. The team would benefit, and the fund raising was successful to the point where we have many individuals running one or two extra systems in their home that belong to the team. There is a special user account that the team owned systems run under.

I understand the general parameters to qualify for a bonus. Have a passkey, turn in at least 10 good a2 or a3 results, and continue to turn in at least 80% good results.

A passkey is uniquely generated for a username/e-mail address combination - if you have two e-mail addresses, you can have two passkeys. If you have two usernames, and one e-mail address, you can have two passkeys.

My question - In our team's situation, where we have many operators running one or more dedicated crunchers all on a single account, should

*each operator have a passkey of their own, (with the understanding they'd have to qualify
10 results before beginning to receive bonus points), getting any bonus

or

*each operator have a common passkey (thereby eliminating the delay in qualifying for bonus points)

It's really up to you. If the machines are fast enough to earn bonus points, it shouldn't take that long to crunch 10 qualifying WUs.

I would recommend that the person responsible for monitoring those machines register his email and use that passkey. That's probably closest to the first choice. That way if Stanford ever decides to use the email that your registered to contact you, at least the data would go to the right person. I don't know if they ever plan to use that capability, but it would probably be a reasonable thing to do.in certain circumstances. If my machine happened to go berserk and started trashing the servers and I didn't notice it, I'd like them to be able to contact me.
