Which client do I use?

Post by Tomwa »

So for ages now ATI has offered me the chance to install Folding@Home with my drivers and since I didn't know what it was I didn't allow it to install now that I know what it is however it seems pretty awesome. The problem is I don't know which client I should use so...

I have a.....
Core i7 920 CPU O.C. to 3.2GHz
ATI Radeon 5870 Graphics Card
1TB Harddrive
64bit installation of Windows 7 Ultimate

Which version of the client should I use?

You CAN use several different clients, in various combinations, depending on your technical comfort level.

The easiest way to start is to use the CPU "uniprocessor" Systray client. Installation and configuration are straightforward, but will not use all your machine's capabilities.

Next easiest is to install 1 CPU Console client for each of your CPU cores (assuming 4 for the i7). When run as Services after initial configuration, they are essentially "out of sight; out of mind." Mind the instructions in the Wiki (http://fahwiki.net/index.php/FAH_%26_SM ... le_Clients) and/or Install Guides (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Guide) about installing to separate folders (e.g., C:\Fah\CPU1 and C:\Fah\CPU2...) and setting different Machine IDs (1-8; recommend 1-4 for 4 CPU clients) for each client instance.

In addition to the above, you can run the "high performance" GPU client, which uses the 5870 GPU for calculations instead of the i7 CPU. The GPU client runs well alongside the CPU client[s] on most machines. You will have to read up on the Environmental Variables in various threads here; search for them. Also, the Console client version runs best alongside the CPU clients, and you'll have to assign another Machine ID (e.g., 5). Running the GPU client as a Service was not supported under Vista, but I don't know the status re Win7.

Finally, and the most difficult for many in terms of installation, configuration, and maintenance, is to replace ALL your CPU client instances with a single SMP client (which is described as high performance AND beta). If you're reasonably technically savvy, you can do this up front, instead of progressing through the CPU clients described above. The SMP client makes best use of the i7 CPU resources, and can also be run alongside the GPU client. Running the SMP client as a Service is also not supported, so you'll likely wind up with the SMP and GPU clients showing constantly in the Taskbar.

Others may talk about Virtual Machines and Linux, but that's an entire additional story...

I am technical but by no stretch of the imagination a linux guru. Never installed a linux OS in my life; did solaris about 20 years ago, but that is a different era any more :-) Last weekend I decided to try running up ubuntu on an AMD dual-core in a VM. Googled a how-to from 2007 that was for ubuntu v6 but it wasn't that much different, just easier than those instructions. Within 2-2.5 hours, I had an SMP version running in the VM. Don't forget to sort out the process priorities if mixing with a GPU client or PPD will suffer. In the end, with about 3 hours tinkering, it all works fine.

All the tools and OS to set it up are free. As long as you have adequate memory to dedicate to the VM, no real risk in giving a bash. And setting up linux in a VM is serious geek porn :eugeek:

Um Yeah thanks for the help lol I think I have some reading to do...

Okay So SMP It is I guess the problem is it says

"At present your GPU is not supported or you need a current driver.
You may wish to consider running our standard client,
which you can dowload at folding.stanford.edu"

Guess the 5870 isn't supported?

Not automatically - you will need to use the -forcegpu ati_r700 flag.

Fantastic GPU version working perfectly used -forcegpu ati_r700 flag and everythings great now about SMP I cant seem to get that to make progress it just says 0 out of 500000 forever.

Which Smp client are you running, Windows or LInux??
Also Monitor your clients using FAHMon, HFM.net or similar - they give you easily readable info. Use the Tools link at the top of the page

Well I'm using windows 7 Ultimate 64bit (As I stated above) but it just refuses to work. I downloaded "Windows: V6 Beta SMP/CPU clients e4fa59c4a1f6a040d8b22780c87c6d35" and installed it ran install.bat so and launched it with the exe went through some gibberish skipped advance options and it said everything was good and it is STILL sitting at 0. Also my GPU client keeps abandoning Work Units its count up and it will start over way before it hits the huge 10000000 number (or however many zeros it has).

OK

Can you please post the contents of your Fahlog.txt files for both clients. Use the code tags at the to of the message box.
Open Fahlog.txt, Highlight and copy everything to the clipboard, Flip back to your browser, press the code button. You should see{code][/Code]. paste the contents between them,

That way we can help trouble shoot

Fixed the SMP needed a different machine ID both were 1

Heres the log for the GPU
