Re: FAH won't run correctly as a 'standard' user on Win10 (F
I had to do a restart (MS can still not update without a restart) and yep: all settings were removed again. So CPU slot back, ID lost (But the GPU slot was still there). You see this more often with software made for WinXP/98, or that started in that period. I'm lucky I do not need to do the rewrite...

Re: FAH won't run correctly as a 'standard' user on Win10 (F
Yes, I'm the *nix style, so one admin account with install privileges and one limited user for normal work, and only GPU for F@H. So I am probably a bit off the average, but hopefully a help in finetuning. So install in separate (outside of \program files(x86)\), take owner ship for both the data di...

Re: Can't get my GPU to work
So the way for me to get F@H to see my GPU again was to place this GPUs.txt file in the program directory for the client, not in appdata. Are you sure the paths are defined ok in this version? Also see my comments on location of log files and database within the program dir.

So to add to the privs problems.
If you look at the program directory (usually in \Program Files...\
you can see a log file, a config file and a control database being written. Why are those not in the data dirs?
log.txt
FAHControl.db
config.xml

Re: Can't get my GPU to work
1060. Reboot did not work, GPU-txt file is present. Version before this one (7.5.1) the GPU was working/recognized.bruce wrote:What GPU do you have?

Re: FAH won't run correctly as a 'standard' user on Win10 (F
That's your problem. First, log on as your limited user, not as the Admin user. Then run the installer from that perspective. During the installation it will ask you for the necessary authorization to write the programs in ProgramFiles. The working files will go in your private directory, as they s...

Re: Can't get my GPU to work
I just upgraded to 7.6.x and yep, no GPU anymore available. Adding the slot does not work.

Re: FAH won't run correctly as a 'standard' user on Win10 (F
It is really happening to me as well. I have a limited user account, so install stuff as a privileged user. It appear H@H still uses the unsecure practise to download stuff in the program directory. Mind you, I have set a shared app data as the data dir, but still get permission issues. Also the err...

Re: Opening up Folding@Home
Using the two together on one machine is very tricky. I have never seen a blue screen caused by BOINC apps (BOINC will run the mini programs) but the two compete heavily for the same resources. At this moment there does not seem to be a GPU task on COVID in the BOINC spectrum, my only reason to be h...

Re: The worst software I have ever seen.
Exactly my thoughts. In the long run Cancer or Alzheimer's will kill many many more people than Covid19, we all should encourage people to continue afterwards. You are forgetting about old age... Won't go into that discussion to far, but when this COVID19 stuff is over, I will move happily away aga...

Re: The worst software I have ever seen.
[off topic] ethnic minorities generally have less disposable income, are less likely to have health insurance, are less likely to be able to work from home, less likely to be able to have the time for exercise, likely to be in less healthy living conditions, less able to eat healthily, etc. lots of...

Re: Opening up Folding@Home
Well, interesting history.
I think current times are historical as well, with a massive increase of user base.

Re: Opening up Folding@Home
Oh my, I seriously do not want to tread toes here. I am just responding to sk69 and his/her wish to open up F@H (and thus supporting JimboPalmer): there is already a very large platform for distributed computing. Larger... well, comparing data of this week to a source on WIKI is apples and... BOINC ...

Re: Opening up Folding@Home
Coming from the other side, I am really curious and wandering why there is even a separate platform like F@H. BOINC has (nearly) everything they would need, and using BOINC would increase the user base massively. As BOINC is much larger and wider, maintenance is wider (maybe not easier) and as a use...
