Re: Improving performance on multi-core hardware (basic)

Bruce, I'm happy to experiment in my next round of fiddling. How would I get 2 WUs from the same project? (Or am I getting serial WUs from the same project and just not realizing it? I'll check.)

Re: Improving performance on multi-core hardware (basic)

Thank you - I was wondering about CPU vs. GPU power and considered experimenting with it on this very machine! But honestly I have something that works and there's a cooling fan on the way so I'll probably save that for the next one. I currently have 5 machines folding 24/7 (two of which I also use ...

Re: Improving performance on multi-core hardware (basic)

So, here's where I netted out: - On this harrdware, Linux runs a little cooler than Windows, so I'll fold on Linux - I can run a CPU WU on Full (even when not idle and doing my normal light use) and the max temp is managed to a steady 80 deg C (which is okay), even when the laptop is on my lap - As ...

Re: Improving performance on multi-core hardware (basic)

Just confirming: in Linux, on the same hardware, it ran overnight at 100% CPU x 8 with no overheating problem. (Have since set it to 4, I forgot last night.) Windows runs hotter, apparently.

Now testing with the GPU running in parallel (if I can get an assignment).

Re: Improving performance on multi-core hardware (basic)

On this laptop I’ve switched to Linux (elementary OS) which I forgot I had installed in parallel. Unlike windows, Linux seems perfectly happy to run a CPU WU at 100% CPU indefinitely on an idle machine without overheating. I’ll let it run overnight and see how it goes. Thanks for the advice on check...

Re: ETA after expiration: cancel WU?

Just following up: with what I know now, I assume this was a heat problem. I'm probably going to stop folding on this machine until I can get a cooling mat.

Re: Improving performance on multi-core hardware (basic)

I did what PantherX said and capped it at 4 processors and utilization shot up from 50% to 58%+ and that seems to be holding - all temps are staying mostly below 80 deg C

Re: Improving performance on multi-core hardware (basic)

I've done some more experimenting. (Among other things, I set the laptop on a windowsill on top of a bag of frozen peas.) When I am folding on Light, the temp stays low enough that all 8 processors are in action and I get overall 50%+ CPU utilization (and increasing). The additional CPU utilization ...

Re: Improving performance on multi-core hardware (basic)

Okay, that all makes sense, thank you for your clear reply. The issue here, as you implied, is apparently that Windows is parking/throttling CPUs on the laptop to reduce the temperature. When folding on full, this is what I get: Core 1 - 100% - 80 deg C Core 2 - 25% - 78 deg C Cores 3-4 - 0 - 75 deg...

Improving performance on multi-core hardware (basic)

Excuse my terminology, I'm relatively unfamiliar with Windows, but I'll try to be precise: I have two new computers folding, a desktop and laptop. The desktop is performing MUCH better than the laptop, and I don't know why the gap is so high. Just want to make sure I shouldn't be tuning anything on ...

Re: ETA after expiration: cancel WU?

OP here, I do in fact have a Core Duo etc. etc. (what Bruce said), it’s a MacBook Pro 5,2 from 2009. It’s my lowest-end hardware of the 6 I’ve tried folding with, and it ... folds 24/7 with no problem I can see; the current WU will end up taking about 28 hours to run. It even ran fine on my Chromebo...

Re: Win10 7.6.9 doesn't add a slot for my GPU

^ just confirming that PantherX solved it, had the same problem, restarting the machine after install picked up the GPUs.txt file (apparently) and all has worked since. UPDATE 1: This was true on Computer A. On Computer B, none of the obvious solutions discussed here has solved the problem. I'm goin...

Re: ETA after expiration: cancel WU?

Dumped the WU (had to delete and reinstall FAH, couldn't figure out how to get Windows to run as admin). Was actually on 7.5.1 with the stalled WU (sorry for posting on wrong board). Now I'm on the current 7.6.9. The moment I fired up the new install, it pulled a CPU WU, which it's running at normal...
