This info is for dedicated folding computer owners. Windows has automatic update feature. Its mostly good thing, sometimes annoying, but its usually good to keep all system software up-to-date.

TIP: switch Automatic Updates (Control Panel) settings from default setting "Install updates automatically" to "Download automatically, but let me choose when to install".

In default setting You computer updates and performs automatic restart. You find several hours/days later, that folder has been restarted and not folding.

All my machines are set to only notice me that some updates are available, but to do nothing else.

You do have a choice. If you leave automatic updating, you can install the classic FAH client as a service (which starts before anyone logs on). You can also configure Windows to log you on automatically (even if you have a password for SMP) provided you're not concerned about security. Then even the SMP and the GPU clients can resume work with shortcuts in startup.

Personally, I prefer to install updates manually, though, because I don't trust the FAH clients to shut down cleanly so I always want to wait for a checkpoint an then CTRL-C before allowing WIndows to reboot.

Yes, but running additionally 6 or 8 GPU clients needs manual restart. I'm thinking about adding them to startup directory wit fahmon, not done yet.

I have turned off Automatic Updates. I've even disabled Windows Update service. Processor time is expensive, you know ;) If there is an important update, I'll download and install it manually, but until now, I haven't done so.

I find that after a major Windows Update F@H will start up again; but sometimes it can't resume folding the WU it was previously folding. I get some error code and then it starts a new WU. Could the update somehow corrupt the WU?

What is the error code that you get?

I suppose the update could corrupt the WU. I suppose the shutdown sequence may not follow the "normal" shutdown procedure, but that's a very elusive thing to try to test.
