Hey everyone I just joined. I'm pretty newbish at F@H since I haven't reached the age where I can go and buy what I would like to buy for my computer. I'm British, Asian born though.

I would just like to ask for some tricks that any of you guys know. I don't have an uber-computer since I am pretty young and have parents who aren't intrested in computers at all. But I guess it's not too bad. I don't use a GPU. I only use my processer which is pretty suckish! It's a 2.99 GHz. Will anyone be willing to help me out and offer me some help or tell me how I can speed the thing up (without buying)!

Please help.

We would need the computers spec to help you.

So: Processor, Ram, Graphics Card(s), Operating System, at the basic level.

Also a suggestion. Please remove your link to your team, this info is not required, and advertising a team is a capital offense on this forum. May i suggest you read the following page before continuing.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do with that box without spending money. My parents have that same system and I run the Windows client on it. I get anywhere between 80 and 130 PpD depending on the WU received and what else my parents are doing with the machine.

i would check the task manager for RAM and PF usage when youre doing various whastever on the system. i think 1gb of ram is too low for a 3ghz should lead to thrasing. also make the virtual memory settings are good.

Spazzychalk, thanks. Good advice.

I think he will be ok though, with the "Uniprocessor" client. It doesn't have high demands like SMP.

Incognito, consider downloading and installing a temperature monitor. Folding makes the CPU (processor) run at nearly 100%, which will really heat it up. Many brand (off the shelf) computers are not made to handle that.

sorry i was thinking more in genereal. folding is very low demand on memory, but for the rest of the comuter as a whole, you want to run out of processor just before you run out of memory, and 3ghz and 1 gb isnt gonna do that. for xp a memory upgrade to 1.5gb or 2.0 will do it. i have a similar dell syste with 2.4ghz and it runs out of processor right around 1.3gb of mem. so for me a stick and a half is enough. for you id say 2 sticks probably. id also guess your 1gb is 2 half gig sticks? so replace 1 at a time. see how it does on 1.5 before replacing the other one. and if you only have a single gig stick, even better you only have to do it once.

my toshiba laptop overheats severely like you mentioned. i have folding dialed down from 100% to 80, which on my dual core means 40%. ive already blow it out which did improve it and theres no way im taking it apart myself to blow the rest out. when i put the computer down i have to leave the top open so i can set it on its side and not block the fan. its ridiculous. what temp monitor should i download? i have 32 bit vista. incognito needs to know which one for his XP too. and what should the temps be

He doesn't need to start upgrading even before he dips his toes into Folding. I agree with you that a number of upgrades would make his computer more zippy, but right now he wants to set up Folding. In my opinion (sometimes humble, sometimes not) he should download and install the Uniprocessor with his computer in stock hardware configuration. Incognito also needs to install a *temperature monitor. Let's get him going with something, then maybe talk about upgrades. :)

* it's been so long since I've run a single-core CPU that I do not know the preferred monitor

ok yes he needs the unicore client http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegrou ... ay-623.msi its a single core computer. as i said, folding uses practically no memory. the memory upgrade would be for other computing stuff. incognito - some free tune up you could also do is go

start>run>msconfig>startup and uncheck everything you dont NEED running the second the computer bots up
