With the imminent release of windows 7 (beta) what are the expectations or plans for implementing Folding on this new platform
Being new I am not sure what to expect or when to expect it so can anyone guide me on this?

I tested FAH on Seven already :
- uniprocessor client works like a charm
- you need to install any SMP client as if you were using Vista (it has the same UAC)
- I didn't test the GPU client, but I guess it will work like with Vista (the driver models didn't change in the meantime)

I'm starting this thread now because we know some of you will try the Windows 7 open beta starting in 2 days, and you'll likely try folding on it. We make _NO_ claims that the client will work on Windows 7 yet, we haven't tried it.
Some things you can expect are that there will be little if any performance difference of the CPU Folding@home cores as we already make the hardware work as hard as it can, and GPU clients will need properly working drivers - which always take a while for a new OS.
All comments are welcome, but constructive comments will help us the most.
Mods please merge any other Win7 threads into this one from any windows forum.

Merged the above two posts. Unfortunately, they inserted themselves prior to your posting, as they were posted before yours.
Just an FYI

The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: windows 7.

I tried installing SMP in Windows 7.
It failed and would not connect to the machine.
I disabled the firewall in case that was the root cause. Going to try some other things too. Probably related to UAC.
GPU2 client works like a champ.

Run the install.bat in Administrator account (in fact you can follow a Vista guide to install it under Seven).

I followed the Vista guide and this is what I get when I run intsall.bat as the administrator:

I've also tried setting the executables to run with Vista compatibility but it gives me the same error.

Strange ... it worked fine with me.
But I have already seen this error under Vista (I don't remember how to fix it) ... you should search on the forum for threads about it.

I got it working. The problem (I think) was due to a space in the current directory name. I moved it to C:\folding rather than in my user directory and it seems to be working fine now.

Tested Gpu folding on Windows 7 x64 vs Vista x64.
No problem installing W7 on a differen parision on my PC. Its automaticly sets up dual boot. No problems staring up old Vista or New W7.
RivaTuner and FahMon works fine. No problem innstalling multi GPU following Vitsa guide.
My 2 9800GX2's giving 20900ppd(4 clients) in W7 with 178.08 drivers. This is the same as in Vista on 180.60. No temp change.
Conclusion is that there is a loss of 300ppd pr. client in W7.(The differens between 178.08 and 180.60 is a loss of app. 300ppd, so if a had 180.60 in W7 I would have lost total 1200ppd.) Thats why I used the 178.06 on W7.
EDIT: Forgot one thing, W7 automaticly extends desktop to all 4 monitors

Just wanted to let you know that I've maneged to get folding running stable (apparently) on windows 7.
Havent seen any posts about this so I thought I'd give you the heads up.
Installed the current cuda drivers for vista and my 9800gtx is crunching away nicely.

I have it installed with no problems at all. It seems to be about the same time folding projects as Vista is.

After 2 breakdown's in the last 24h I'm back on Vista. It just freezes. And no contact with PC is possible. Have to pull the plug to get started again.

Breakdowns while folding? Which client or clients? On what kind of hardware? The more info you post, the more helpful it would be. Thanks.

Uniprocessor console clients work well as services.
The systray clients (uniprocessor and GPU) do not appear to cleanly shut down as they usually do under Vista if you do not manually shut down the clients before shutting down the computer. No shutdown messages appear in the log of those systray clients, and FahMon gets confused with their statuses. Fortunately I have not lost any work yet.
GPU2 is also working well with the pre-release drivers with no noticeable decline in PPD compared to Vista's drivers that came with the CUDA 2.0 package.
Edit: SMP on MPICH works great too on x64
