if not, what would make my machine unstable?
i am not OCing it, there was no other work on at the same time, the display wasnt running.
or does this kind of thing happen as a matter of course?

Yes.

It does happen occasionally and may have nothing to do with your machine. Look at the recent threads for details on difficulties with some of the folding clients right now. The Pande Group is aware of the problem(s) and are working on a fix.
