All the preprocessing does is strip out the useless data... the actually useful data is sent out to be processed on the LHC DC project (which runs through BOINC), using the same fundamental idea as F@H.

If you want to get a go on their computer system now might be a good time though... the LHC has developed a crack and is leaking helium, so has been shut down until next March for repairs and other stuff lol

I think you put too much importance on the LHC DC part of the equation here. It is more likely the LHC DC is mere novelty or public stunt here and LHC GRID does all the work.

Yes, these things spit out MASSSIVE amounts of data, but they are stripping that down to a small amount almost immediately. The pretty pictures you see of the particle explosions are the results (along with the timing of course) once it's all stripped down.

It's actually fairly non-compute intensive, but by far the most data-intensive thing on the planet.

In other words, exactly the opposite of what you want for DC.
