I looked around the forum but could not find my issue.

I have an older Windows PC built in 2020. My Client is currently 7.6.21. I am adding a new PC and looking at installing v8.4.9. I have an old account but see that a PassPhase is now called for. I just want to get going with my new PC in the easiest manner possible and yet have the production for both machines linked. I looked at the v8.4.9 guide which was helpful but left me scratching my head. I currently have v8.4.9 downloaded on my new PC, but how should I proceed at this point to get things all squared out and Work Units humming?

For a single PC you do not need to use the account and passphrase if you don't want to. That is a new feature that allows a folding client running v8 to be remotely managed. It will not connect to v7 clients.

The simplest approach would be to copy username, team, and passkey information from the v7 config.xml file. Paste that into the appropriate fields after you have installed v8.4.9 on the new PC and proceed with folding. The v8 stats lookup is by username and passkey, so as long as they match you will see summary stats for both.

As a note, v8's installer will usually successfully install over v7 and read the config.xml file for setup. If at a later time you want to manage both from one system, you can do that. Then apply to setup an account with passphrase, you will be emailed a confirmation email and then a "token" to be entered into the systems web control so both can be controlled by the other.

I just sent a reply that I had written a couple of hours ago and just let sit.
I since started folding on my new computer. I noticed that the Folding@home Client was already picking up my new desktop. I ignored the Login button and poked around and filled in everything I could following the v8.4.9 guide and your prior reply and managed to get things going. It took a while to get a download, but things seem to be running right along now.
I will run things for a while and then figure out if can manage things over both computers and check to see if my points are being aggregated under my passkey (not the most important consideration really).

Joe_H it is my belief that you need the passkey entered on all of your machines, to get "bonus" points on each machine. Years have passed, times have changed, and I could be wrong, but there was a time when the passkey gave you bonus points. Any machine without the passkey didn't get those extra points.

What was asked about was the "passphrase", not the passkey. Setting up an account with a passphrase is new with v8, it is not the passkey. That allows multiple v8 clients to be monitored and controlled remotely no matter where they are located. The equivalent feature in v7 was only usable on a local network.

I did give directions for using the existing passkey, username and team information from the v7 system. You skipped right over that.

Thanks, guys! Both of my computers, new and old have the original passkey loaded from 2020 which should tie them together with respect to aggregate accounting hopefully. Shortly I will update my v7.6.21 and work through the process of adding a passphrase to by "account" and getting tokens?? for each so that I can control both together from one or the another (hopefully). Not totally necessary, but why not?

Just one thing I forgot to mention. You can install v8 over v7 and it will pick usable settings such as team, username, and passkey. However it will not continue work on a WU in progress. So finish any WUs being done before upgrading.
