CPU folding and 5900x

Hello all!
I recently upgraded to a 5900x CPU. Is CPU folding still needed? What are the best settings for it? Right now, I'm just using the same 9 thread config from my old 3800x. Should I do something like 15 / 9?

Your 5900x has 12 cores / 24 threads. From a power efficiency I would suggest a single 12 thread slot. Above that the power usage goes up and there is greater contention for the 12 FPUs available on the 5900X. So higher thread setting may get get you some additional F@h WU throughput, but at the cost of a disproportionate increase in power usage.
Others may hav different perspectives depending on what is important to them. But in any case there are plenty of CPU based projects looking to have WUs processed.

Thanks! I'll give 12T a try.

nice, 12T is running around 315k PPD, with cores ~4.5Ghz

Wow, the 4070 is showing about 5 mil PPD

That's pretty low for a typical WU on a 4070. Is it a cancer WU?

A 4070 Ti should be showing PPD estimates in the 9-14M range, depending on WU. Maybe a little lower on Windows.

It sounds like Kebast hasn't set aside any CPU cores to manage the GPU, and that's going to affect GPU performance.

He has 12 threads left over to manage that. Need to get some more info from the OP.

I did see better performance after that WU finished. I had paused to restart a few times during that one as well.
Normal range is 8-9 mil so far. I've also got it set to "quite" mode, so not sure if that's going to affect folding much.
Thanks all, I'll let it run back to back sometime when I'm not home to get some better data points for it.

GPU is a TUF-RTX 4070 ti.
I'm running all default settings right now. I forgot to turn on monitoring software last night, but right now WU 18723 (50, 7, 42) is running at about 7.5mil PPD
Few notes from the GPU Tweak III software:
Current clock speed is 2805
Memory clock is 20504
GPU usages between 91% - 94%
Oh, also, I didn't modify the slot configuration at all. GPU is on Auto, no beta flags or anything.

and then I get something like 18213 (33481, 1, 25) that runs at over 14mil PPD

I just had a 5900X die...... F. It was a few years old, but still!
18213 will have the highest PPD and 18723 is a Cancer and will have some of the lowest PPD.

If 7.5mil is my lowest, I'm pretty happy with that.
I didn't realize the 5900x was even that old, but I guess it is slightly over 2 years old. I caught a good amazon sale a few months ago.

I replaced it with a 5800x that I got on sale. Rarely ever used the full compute of the 5900x.
Roughly speaking, the 3070's doubled the PPD of the 2070's. The 4070ti has roughly doubled (or more) the 3070 series. I think that is pretty impressive.
