GPU Disabled

Hi all,

Just got my old desktop running again and put it to work, but my GPU shows as disabled. I looked for fixes, but it appears to be on the list in GPUs.txt and I believe it's on the whitelist. I also checked for updated drivers but it seems mine are current.

I am using Ubuntu 20.04, my GPU is an AMD Radeon R7 250X/ HD 7770/8760

From the logs:

Welcome to the folding support forum.

You may be able to get this system set up to fold under Linux, but it will take looking for older drivers and possibly older linux kernels to do so. AMD dropped full support in the drivers for OpenCL on Linux years ago for 1st generation GCN based GPUs such as your Radeon R7 250X. A year ago support for OpenCL in the AMD drivers was broken for GCN 4th generation GPUs and the newest drivers no longer provide that support at all.

You may be able to fold using this GPU under Windows, AMD ended full support with OpenCL somewhat later. As for Linux, I recall posts from about 2 years ago from someone who took on the challenge of getting one of theses GPUs or a similar one running again on Linux. It was involved.

Thank you! I have a Windows partition so I will try it there first.

If you are curious, here is a post from almost 3 years ago on what it took for one person to get one of these GPUs to fold under Linux - viewtopic.php?f=81&t=35320&start=30#p340362. Essentially they created a VM running Ubuntu 14.04 with old drivers and video passthrough. I don't know if that would still work, the GPU folding core has changed since then. The post is part of a longer topic on this older GPU. I don't happen to recall the latest version of Ubuntu that the older AMD driver still works with.

Thanks for the linux info, I may look into that when I've got some spare time and will definitely report back if successful. In the meantime, I tried it on Windows and it worked so my GPU is now humming along in tandem. Your help is much appreciated.

According to the error code, something is wrong with the OpenCL platform ...
