Hello at all
I've been running the client again for the last few months. for a long time with a GTX 970 and that has always worked flawlessly. Now I temporarily switched to a 3070 about 2 weeks ago, because I wanted to play a game again. Yesterday I switched back to the 970. Since then, I no longer get a WU for the GPU. And I get error messages in the log for the first time. Can anyone tell me if this is still due to the WU shortage or if there is another problem at my end?

Check the server stats for yourself.
GRO_A7 and GRO_A8 are CPU jobs.
OPENMM_22 is GPU jobs.

My GPUs are also low on WUs. I always assume it is at F@H end. (GTX 1060 and RTX 3060)

I'm waiting for work too.... Though it did not help to have to do an O/S re-installation from scratch on my 16-core system (including drivers and F@H; to fix something I messed up).

When there are workunit shortages like currently this is IMO the best time to do reinstalls, updates, case clean outs and stuff. I just dedusted some case fans and suddenly getting much better cooling, a bonus.

About a month ago I replaced the motherboard in my Ryzen system. It had power cycled three days on the trot. That system was down for about a fortnight getting diagnosed, waiting for parts and finally stress tested to ensure it was stable.

I think this current lack of work unit could be tied into the problems they're having with projects 18201/2, the work/collection servers for those projects and it possibly being that quiet time of the year.

Same here on both my GPU based folding machines for COVID-19 which have run almost non stop for a month.
They stopped getting WUs early yesterday morning (before 7 am UK time) so after a while I decided to leave both machines off all day. Restarted them earlier this morning but no COVID-19 WUs so far (11:00 UK).

I Changed one of the GPU machines to look for 'Any Disease' instead of COVID-19 and it is folding normally with work server 207.53.233.146.
Did I just see the work server change when it picked up a new work unit?

As of 11:00 (UK BST) I'm still waiting for a COVID-19 WU from 206.223.170.146 but I'll change the target sometime today if nothing turns up.

'Work servers' shown in FAHControl when waiting for a COVID-19 WU and failing to get one:
128.174.73.74 (OPENMM_22) which had a warning and 'No' in column 'Has CS'
206.223.170.146 (GRO_A7, OPENMM_22) which looks OK.
(are these actual work servers?)
Earlier, the work server was set to 0.0.0.0 for both machines.

Using current Windows 10 Pro 64 bit with NVIDIA GPUs
No Windows updates since 22nd June when NVIDIA Driver updated to 27.21.14.6679

It's frustrating. Tens thousands of people worldwide are ready to make their computers and power resources available in the fight against diseases, but the FAH support team does not communicate with us if there are problems with the provision of work packages.
The FAH support team should report problems promptly. Ideally, temporarily on the start page or at least on that of the support. As it is now, many people waste time with seeming solutions that doesn't work and some give up in frustration.

Just an FYI, it's not just y'all it's everybody. There are currently (as of posting) no public GPU WUs according to Serverstats. It also looks like projects 182xx were withdrawn (at least temporarily) for a variety of reasons. But if the scientist sees this they can expound on the why without me speculating.

Hi all,

Sorry for the silence from FAH science team. There is indeed both a GPU and CPU work unit shortage. A couple of reasons drive this- first and foremost we do our best to make sure that every WU we release is scientifically valuable so that you are not wasting your time or electricity on meaningless calculations. Recently, due to the huge support from the community, the COVID moonshot sprint which was contributing a significant number of GPU WUs to F@H was completed. We cannot thank you enough for your contributions.

I've been working on releasing several CPU and GPU projects to understand one of the proteins involved in Alzheimer's disease. These WUs are appearing in the 182xx series. Unfortunately, as we were scaling up to send these WUs out we ended up overloading our work server (128.252.203.11). As a result we've had issues assigning points from that server and also receiving WUs back. I've put a pause on all of the 182xx projects until we can get our server woes resolved as we want to make sure that any WU we send out we can properly receive back. Our current plan is to wait for all WUs assigned by that server to return before we begin to reassign jobs in that series. Based on the deadline for the 182xx project series, the timeline for this is ~5 days from now. In the meantime we're working to get another work server online and stocked with both CPU and GPU WUs.

In addition to my project series, several other project series are currently working their way through testing. As I'm not involved in those project series, I can't comment on the projected timeline but hope that that series is available soon. Thank you for your continued support for F@H and apologies for the lack of work to do.

Thanks for the detailed answer. Still, it would be good to report a problem right away. Then everyone affected knows that it has been recognized and that work is being carried out to rectify it, instead of looking for errors elsewhere or even giving up.

I'm getting GPU work now - thanks to everyone who mitigated or fixed the problem.
I wonder if it would be possible to have a fixed location for general announcements on the server, project and WU status.
A report on the issues and expected time to fix would allow people to switch off the machines when not used for other work.

The front page of this forum does indeed say:

The Folding@home team know about the work unit shortage.

That message is a bit outdated, since it was put there in the big ramp-up in spring of 2020. So new reports of lack of work, or server problems, are appreciated, and perhaps it should be updated more often with known issues which don't need to be reported.

I would, however, like to remind my fellow folders that the scientists are the "customers" of the F@H project, and apart from one (or two?) salaried developers, all the rest of the support "staff" are volunteers like you and me. Again, updates are appreciated, and I'd rather see the GPUs go idle than do pointless work.

There are people who have set up their rigs to automatically run other projects (like in BOINC) if F@H doesn't have WUs available.
