Had an interesting discussion with my doctor this morning about an off label use of the MMR vaccine that they have been using at the local hospital/clinic for a while now and their own results have been very interesting among the health care works.

I figured what the heck as any form of the MMR vaccine that I had was many a long year ago and if nothing else it would be a booster.

What are the thoughts of those in the research fields thought about this?

It has been noted for some time that live vaccines such as the MMR seem to also generate some immunity to other infections for periods of time, it is not clear however how useful this in under current circumstances. If you are due to have an MMR booster then by all means do it, if you are not you would have to balance the risk (however small) of having an unnecessary live vaccine.

NB I am referring to the off label use of this vaccine.

Some back ground on Rubella, as I am a Lions Club member.*

If you have been born, Rubella is a minor irritation but not usually a serious disease. If you are pregnant, your unborn child very likely will have serious birth defects.

The UK tried only vaccinating women, but the success rate was no where near the US, which vaccinated everyone. Leaving a pool of susceptible people is a bad idea.

* I am on the Hearing and Deafness Committee for the state of MS, 30% of all 'born deaf' cases were due to Rubella, and the vaccine was discovered in 1969, the population of the Deafness School was 30% lower by the late 80s. The MS state legislature now approves Cochlear implants for young children, so the population is even lower.

You may think of the Lions as Eyeglasses and Hearing Aids, but we would much rather prevent than treat.
