GPUs listed as disabled in ubuntu

When I have 2 graphics cards (1660S and 970) in my system, folding at home doesnt recognize either and lists them as gpu: -1:-1 and says disabled. When I try to remove them, the web control shows a bunch of GPU's that are deleting but none ever do. What can I do to fix this?

Have you installed the proprietary drivers? (The ones you get from Ubuntu do work.)

It's possible to download the drivers directly from nVidia, but the .run file they provide will destroy the graphics window (if you have one). Apparently it was only tested on ubuntu-server. Ubuntu does provide updated installation code that are smart enough to blacklist the GUI driver ... install the required driver ... and reenable the GUI.

I have had this happen in Fedora 33, but I have figured out how to deal with it (as I'm not messing w/putting Windows Server 2008 on that system).

Sorry I do not know the Ubuntu tricks to try yet.

Search for alternate drivers in the Ubuntu support forums

You don't need Windows!

I'm running Fedora 33 right now.... :)

As for my Socket 775 rebuild.... I'm replacing the motherboard on it next month--it's dead for sure now (I'm salvaging everything I can from it). And Windows is not going on it.

Edit: I am however upgrading to a Ryzen 9 (3950XT), and an 850 Watt PS (preparing to add an RTX 3090 when demand calms down).
