Folding with GPU under Win7

Posted: Thu Nov 12, 2020 9:23 am

Hey there,

I am folding on an linux server for some weeks now.

Right now I am playing arround with some old hardware (Intel Core2 @2,6GHZ) an would like to fold with some older GPUs (NVIDIA GeForce 6800GS for example).
Because of driver issues I have to use Windows 7.

Can someone give me a hint how I can enabel GPU folding?

kind regards - Sascha

Welcome to the folding support forum.

You will not be able to enable a GeForce 6800GS for folding. It is too old and the hardware does not support capabilities needed by the folding core in current usage. Basic requirement is support for both single and double precision arithmetic (FP32 & FP64) and OpenCL 1.2. For nVidia GPUs that would be Kepler based GPUs and newer - GT 630 or better. Some older Fermi based cards that support some of the OpenCL 1.2 standard, but are listed as supporting 1.1 will work, but may fail on some WUs or projects.

Welcome to Folding@Home!
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/g ... 00-gs.c145

In early video cards like yours, they had separate hardware for calculating Pixels, Textures and Vertices. In later cards they made a general purpose software shader that can be programmed to do any of these. As this software becomes more advanced, F@H can reprogram it to be better at modeling proteins instead of graphics. As Joe_H mentions this is useful at Kepler. While your card was designed in 2005, Kepler gets designed in 2012.

Thanks for the quick answers, I understand the issue now.

Unfortunelty I found an GT-630 GPU. :D
But the GPU is disabled and I cant get it to folding. :(
Is there some magic to do or is it because I have to use this GPU for my Display.

with kind regards - Sascha

It may be that whilst the GT630 is nearer the requirements to fold it is borderline (only OpenCL 1.1 but that may not matter if Cuda can work) and may not have been whitelisted due to not being able to fold WUs within the required timescales (it has very few shaders - I don't know what the current realistic cut off is but iirc it is above the number this GPU has - if it can meet deadlines I would guess it will need to be folding 24/7) .. It could also be that the correct drivers are not installed (try sourcing from nVidia if you haven't already done so) or even a configuration setting .. I am not near any of my kit so cant check the current GPUs.txt file to see if this is the first issue - I am sure someone will be able to do this and comment shortly .. I note Joe_H mentioned the GT 630 so I guess it is whitelisted but a good idea to check this is the case.

There was a thread a while back that may have relevance re the shader count ... https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php? ... s+too+slow.

When I mentioned the GT 630 I should have added that it comes from several releases. Some of the early ones were based on Fermi chips and were just rebranded GT 430 and GT 440 cards. Others were based on Kepler chips. Of the ones I can get specs on quickly, one has 192 shaders, the better one has 384 and was released about a year later.

I was just going off https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/g ... t-630.c816 which indicated shaders a tad lower hence my query .. hadn't realised came in better specs .. no I find the rev 2 variant https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/g ... ev-2.c2376 which looks more possible :)

The last I heard, FAH cannot support CUDA on Fermi but it can on Kepler. It wouldnot surpise me to learn that this corresponds to ultimatre demarkation between OpenCL support and non-support. Be sure which generation of GT710 you have.
