FAH can't find gpu, but thinks I have FOUR cpus... Help!

First off, I'm new to folding but I am computer literate. Right now I've got five rigs folding 24/7, running about 6 million ppd between them. I'm really enjoying this, and I feel like I'm helping in a rather hopeless time. I just assembled rig #6, and v7.6.9 simply will not acknowledge that a gpu exists. I'm using a GTX 1660 ti for setup (and will change to 2x FirePro S10000 when I get it going), but right now the software simply does not work. In prior installations I've had similar problems, and all were resolved by replacing gpus.txt and/or adding a gpu slot in configurations.

But replacing gpus.txt did nothing on this rig, and every time I try to add a gpu the software adds a CPU! It now shows four (the rig only has one), and all are running different projects at abysmally slow rates, no hope of completion, and still no gpu. Here's a screenshot:https://ibb.co/ZK1W3Zw

Drivers are current, I'm doing the exact same things I did to cure the others, but nothing is working. Here's the log, any idea what to try next? This is getting very frustrating!

Code: Select all

A couple things

o I wouldn't trust any of the time calculations until your projects hit 1%. 24hrs is just a placeholder. I have every reason to believe the projects will complete before they expire.
o What does the "system info" tab say? You should see at least one line that says "OpenCL Device N Platform:N Device:N Bus:N Slot:N Driver 445.87" if that line isn't present, it should be. Try restarting the computer, the client doesn't automatically recognize a new device after installation. After restarting, check for the presence of that line, if it appears, you're good. I would then command your projects to finish, and when they do, configure your slots.

The issue is the client not picking up the GPU in your system:
13:52:35: GPUs: 0
13:52:35: CUDA Device 0: Platform:0 Device:0 Bus:1 Slot:0 Compute:7.5 Driver:11.0
13:52:35:OpenCL Device 0: Platform:0 Device:0 Bus:1 Slot:0 Compute:1.2 Driver:445.87

Generally speaking, downloading the latest GPUs.txt file in C:\Users\matt\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient followed by a system restart should resolve the issue. If it doesn't can you please post some GPU-Z screenshots so we can see the device ID to ensure that it is in the GPUs.txt file?

Thank you for the quick response. The system info does now show an OpenCL device as you describe, but I think it's because I went searching in the software for answers and found a file called "config.xml". I edited it to match my other rigs, and it now shows the proper gpu waiting for a job.

I'm sure this kind of fix is not recommended, but it seems to have worked. I'm afraid this release is seriously broken, I can't imagine the average joe digging this deep. More likely there's a lot of people out there with hot cpus and idle gpus that think it's actually working.

I got it fixed by editing "config.xml" which I found in the directory. I changed it to match the file on my other single-gpu rigs, and it's now working. Perhaps not recommended, but it worked.

I was pretty sure the card ID wasn't the issue, I have used it before for folding. It's kind of a "place holder" while I finish refurbing the cards this rig was built for, two dual-gpu Firepro S10000's.

While I am glad that you sorted it out, it is weird as most donors placed the GPUs.txt file, reboot their system and they are off folding. However, something is unique about your system preventing you from having a comparatively smooth experience.

I'm curious what happened to your CPU jobs once you edited the config file?

Generally speaking, the WUs tries to find the next most suitable Slot. If it does, it will be assigned to it and will wait for its turn. If no suitable slot is found, it will be dumped.
