These warnings and errors are not alarming: they just indicate that the servers are momentarily overloaded (a very common occurrence right now) and that you have to be patient. It will start eventually.

I am running into a similar situation. I understand that the connection errors themselves aren't alarming, and just need to be sorted out on the server end, but as far as I can tell, I'm not sure I've ever connected to the server. When I go to check my stats, it says that none are available. Is this also a side effect of the aforementioned server issue, or do I need to do something specifically? I made sure that the port was open in my firewall.

Points are currently credited late because the collection servers, where data is parked until it can be processed by the work unit servers, currently don't credit points directly. You'll get them eventually, there's just a (currently significant) delay.
