Having trouble in first use

Post by creamelectricart »

Hi all,

We recently downloaded and installed FAH. I've got a passkey, and I've set up the FAH software on about 20 different machines, all using the same name/passkey.

The machine details vary, but the software setup is the same on all. Here is an example of one of the better machine specs.

Computer Specs: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX 32 Core / 128GB RAM / 2 x NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti
Network Connection: 100mb symmetrical fibre
Operating System: Windows Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.720)
Overclocked?: No
Stable?: Yes
Software: FAHClient 7.5.1
WU details: I appear to have Work Unit 14303 (9, 235, 11) for the CPU

I have two main problems. One is that the computer always sits in a 'Ready' status with a yellow circle, even if 'When' is set to 'While I'm working'. Both the CPU and GPUs are at 0.00%. In Task Manager no CPU is being used by FAH. The second problem is that when I click the FAHClient icon in the taskbar and click 'Advanced Control' nothing happens. I would post the log file but I am unsure when to find it.

Any help on getting this going would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

kind regards,
Tristan.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the reply and the instructions. Unfortunately none of those methods work for me. I'm guessing it's because I did a silent install of the software. 'Advanced Control' does nothing, the FAH entry in the Start Menu doesn't exist, and the '%AppData%\FAHClient' location doesn't exist.

I guess I'll probably need to do a manual install on all the machines and then check the logs and see how I go from there.

thanks again,
Tristan.

We got it working after a manual install. Are there any guides to mass installing on multiple Windows nodes?

Not that I'm aware of. I will point out that you can manage many computers remotely using the FAHControl tool, which is accessible using the Advanced Control option as mentioned above. On each computer, go under FAHControl -> Configure -> Remote Access and add a password and the LAN subnet. Then on a primary PC, click the "Add" button in the bottom-left corner of FAHControl and connect to the remote machine. That way you can manage all of them from one place.

No.

The EULA requires the permission of the owner of each machine. On campus that would be the Dean, in a Business, the CEO.

If there was a mass install procedure, they would have folks stealing electricity and computer time on Campus and in Business. So they have focused on the @Home aspect, where the individual willingly shares what is theirs.

Silent install is a red flag for me, if the owner knew, it would not need to be silent.

If you are an IT person who does have support for doing this, there is a topic where some of the issues were discussed and some pointer to possible ways of doing multiple installs. Some of the problems you might encounter also came up. There are other topics where bits and pieces of connected to a Windows setup also have come up.
