RTX 2080 Underperforming

Hey guys, I don't know if there was a restructuring of ppd or what but my card seems to be under-performing at ~150k ppd. 419.17 drivers, Win10 x64, haven't DDU'd in a couple months, I could try that. But FahCore_21.exe only pulls between 2-5% of GPU when I have it set to Full usage in the advanced client. I'm hoping someone can work with me in attempts to resolve it in a logical process as I'm not the savviest at folding.

Thanks.

Welcome to the folding@home support forum Farfie!

The first possibility that comes to mind is the Passkey. Do you have one and have you entered it in your config? If not you won't get any bonus points.

The second possibility would require you to post the 1st 100 or more lines (use the code tags) of your log.txt file which you'll find in the Folding@home Data Directory. We need to see from the start of the System Info section up to and including a few percentages of progress.

I suspect from what I can see re how long a WU is taking there's something wrong with your configuration but without the log it's impossible for me to be sure.

Did you recently add the 2080 to your system? If so, did you re-install the latest driver from http://www.nvidia.com/drivers ? You may have to re-install the driver & the folding software in order for the GPU to be identified properly.

Oh, I had no idea you'd get bonus points for having a passkey. I just thought the points system ended up as an number system to compare system performance. I added the passkey provided from the past using the username/email method and am getting these bonus points.

Of course, I'm less concerned about this now seemingly arbitrary points system, and more so on the fact that my task manager is reporting only about 2-5% GPU usage from WU to WU. I've considered that perhaps the task manager is misreporting actual usage, but the computer still feels perfectly smooth, and I can run rather demanding games at the same time, so I'm tending to believe it's more accurate than not.

I had logging set lower to decrease drive writes, bad idea. I've set it back to 3 and restart the client. Here's the log:

The 2080 is "new," but I also haven't folded in quite some time. I've DDU'd twice since installing it (bought it almost the day it was released) months ago, and the drivers are up to date, as are the Windows updates (checked both just now just in case). I have also tried reinstalling the GPU driver and FAH yesterday just in case, with the same results. I could try DDU again if it comes down to it. Until then, I'll take whatever else ideas you have, and thank you very much for your time.

According to the log you posted the TPF should result in a PPD of ~1.5 million and from what I've seen in these forums that sounds correct. If your passkey is qualified (at least 10 completed using it and an 80% success rate) then you should average 1.5 million points a day as long as you're running 24/7.

p.s. the usage you're seeing is the CPU that's being used to support the GPU ... get something like gpu-z to see more info for the GPU.

Right, I get the ppd now, but none of the posts about folding performance on the 2080 I find are particularly recent, and why is no one talking about how little of the GPU is being used? Again, I can game with this going and I'd prefer to get it so it's using more if not all of the GPU if possible.

It is or it wouldn't be earning 1.5M PPD ... see the p.s. in my last post.

Ah I see, okay. GPU-Z is reporting 83-84% usage, makes a million times more sense than windows task manager's usage. And if you mean the CPU column in the task manager, no, I mean GPU. Windows 10 implemented (although poorly apparently) a GPU utilization column as well as CPU. Seems to report usage on games accurately at least...

Unless that's not what you meant. Either way, I really appreciate the help. Everything seems to be fine. I was being misled by Windows!

The 1.3% usage you're seeing under GPU is the CPU usage that the FahCore_21 is using to keep the GPU happy ... it is not GPU usage.

If you want to fold with the remaining 78% of your CPU resources, you can add a CPU slot. (A second WU will be folded independently.)

The CPU would provide much less resources compared to the GPU and in the worst case, might even slow down FAHCore_21. I recommend you do not allocate less than 100% of the remaining CPU cores. The choice is entirely up to you.

I've had this issue over the years. I believe it's related to the Nvidia driver. I'm currently experiencing underperformance with my two 1080 Ti's. I just installed the latest Nvidia driver 419.17. I normally produce around 2,000,000 points per day. With the latest Nvidia driver, I'm only getting 800,000 points per day. I'm going to rollback to the previous Nvidia driver.

Points can depend on projects. Some projects only use a fraction of your card's performance.
Just wait a few WUs, until another project is assigned.

Don't trust Windows Task Manager to report accurate GPU load : by default it reports 3D/graphics loads (which FAH isn't). You have to manually select "Cuda" to monitor GPGPU loads like FAH.

Or using GPUZ is better ... ;)

In order to have task manager report the GPU usage you need to select one of the field view selectors ie the one that says 3D then select one of the ones that says Compute it'll be either 0 1 or 2 to show actual compute usage because it's not actually a 3D game engine your running when F@H is using OpenCL/Cuda
