While I was going through some boxes in my closet I found a MSI K9 mobo. I remember four 9800 GT cards folding proteins 24/7. I then proceeded to log into Maximum PC forums to see who was still lurking there, only to find they have closed it down. Sad. I then downloaded the new client which seems like cheating. Seems a lot has changed since NotFreds. Are there any new tips or third party programs that I should look for to maximize my PPD? Right now I have a 960 GTX and a I5 4950 in my main rig. I do have several GTX 275s lying around. Would they be worth dusting off?

A GTX 275 was new in 2009 and has 240 Tesla style shaders. (Tesla was replaced by Fermi, which was replaced by Kepler, which was replaced by Maxwell. Rumor has it that Pascal will replace Maxwell in 2016. Optimizing for each new style GPU results in newer Cores.)

Tesla ran Core 11 WUs very well until about a year and a half ago when Pande Group ran out of projects using Core 11.

Some Tesla cores can run Core 15, which is End of Life but still has some WUs left. To trick Tesla to run Core 15, try

1) max-packet-size set to small
2) client-type set to beta (these are not Beta WUs, that is just the trick)

Someday those WUs will run out and there is no trick to make Tesla shaders to do Core 17, but a 240 shader GPU should perform well on Core 15.

Looks like I will just recycle the 275s. They don't make sense as a short term solution. Ebay here I come! Thanks for the reply Jimbo. I welcome other thoughts and suggestions since my team no longer has a forum.

There are many good choices for more modern GPUs, depending on your budget. If you still want NVidia, I wouldn't suggest anything less than a GTX 750 Ti

Do Nvidia cards still have the best performance over AMD? I do have a second slot available on my main rig so probably buy another GTX 960. This weekend I will see if my K9A2 platinum still works. If it does I am strongly considering 4 660 Tis. But looking at the 750 Ti there isn't much difference in price or points compared to the 660Ti. I better not get the cart before the horse. Looks like I have project! Thanks for the replies.

Yes, as of today, the Nvidia cards have better Fah performance. That answer is subject to change.

NV 900 series consume less energy for the same PPD compared with 600 and 700 series. 750 Ti consumes ~ 60W, 660 Ti ~ 150W.

Yeah the 750ti is a Maxwell based gpu which has much better power efficiency than the rest of the 700's which are the older Kepler arch. If you plan on running 4 750ti's on that K9 make sure you get the ones with the additional power connector, a single card can be powered by the mobo but 4 would need to have the cards powered themselves as you will put too much load on the mobo power

Funny you should mention that. I was thinking the same thing on my commute home. LOL I just purchased a new 750 Ti for my son's computer. Upgraded from a GTX 275 and they have no power connector. Looks like there are some available with connectors for the same price.

If you are only running one video card then I can tell you that my MSI NVidia GTX 750 Ti has been running for nearly a week 24/7 with only the power drawn from the PCIe slot (maximum available is 75w I believe) . I am currently getting well over 50000 PPD. Just make sure that your main board fully supports the 750 variant that you are considering as older boards may not work with it.
