Failed to read stream

I have had this problem for the last week on two computers.
Computer one i7 4770K runs Windows 7 Prof 64-bit, two Nvidia GTX 780 GPUs.
Computer two i7 860 runs Windows 7 Prof 64-bit, one Nvidia GTX 970 GPU.
The following log is from computer two.
I have uninstalled, and re-installed many times.
I have uninstalled my Norton 360 anti-virus and firewall.
I have used Driver Cleaner Pro 1.5, and installed the latest Nvidia driver 344.65 (out today 11/10/2014). I have tried deleting the work folder, config folder and files . . . nothing works. GPU running at stock speed. The GTX 970 folded for a couple of days before this problem set in.
Strangely, one of my GTX 780s is folding. But only one.
Also I have computer three on my home newtork running two AMD R9 280Xs and one R9 290 which are just humming along folding without issue.

Many popular firewall programs (including Norton) provide the ability to block an "unknown" program from connecting to the internet. If you can open
http://web.stanford.edu/~pande/Win32/AM ... ore_17.fah from your browser but FAHClient cannot open that same connection, Norton has recognized your browser as "safe" but it has not recognized FAHClient. You have to manually configure an exception for Norton that informs it that FAHClient should be allowed to make that connection and download that file.
If you cannot open that file from your browser, you can figure out what else is wrong with your internet connection.

No firewall. No anti-virus.
Can not open that address in my browser.

Try rebooting your router.

An older and possible fix to this problem involved preferring ipv4 over ipv6 -
http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2533454 .
It wouldn't take long to give the Fix it for me download link a try if for no other reason than ruling it out.

Rebooting router and modem . . ..no help.
preferring ipv4 over ipv6 . . . no help.
I did a fresh install of Windows 7 and device drivers, Windows updates, and fresh install of F@H . .. still not working.
"Failed to read stream"
And remember the third computer on this network running three AMD GPUs is running fine!!!

You could have two separate problems. The GTX 780s take a lot of power. Maybe your power supply can handle only one, and whichever one gets the work unit first wins? Possibly there is even a BIOS setting for the PCIe slots (or internal video adapter) that needs to be changed.
As for the GTX 970, I found a compatibility problem with my Maxwell cards (Asus GTX 750 Tis) and a Gigabyte Z87 Haswell board. They simply didn't get along together, with more strange symptoms than I can recount, though they might work fine for a couple of days. I had to move the cards to a different board (Asrock Z97), where they run fine, and put AMD cards on the Gigabyte board.

I doubt it is a power issue. I have SeaSonic X-1250 1250W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready 80 PLUS GOLD PSU. Not a heat issue, water cooled.
Why would BIOS settings need a change after over a year folding on the computer?
This is what I can't understand.
I have changed
nothing on a computer (with two Nvidia GTX 870s) which has been folding since July 2013.
Then one morning it stops folding.
Also a second computer with a Nvidia GPU also stops folding at the same time. While at the same time a third computer with three AMD GPUs continues to fold
on the same network.
And, at the same time I started getting this:
I get the above when I try to run the web client or go to any stanford websites except
http://127.0.0.1:7396/.

I guess this is possible. I may swap stuff around to check it out. Thanks for the thought.
The GTX 970 is in an ASUS P7P55D EVO motherboard. P55 chipset. It only has two PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots. Can't fit all three AMD cards.

We're still talking about a "Failed to read stream" error. RIght? That indicates an internet connection error.
Have you looked at
the serverstat page?
If the Connect column says Accepting you should be able to establish a connection either with your browser or by way of FAHClient. If it DOESN'T say Accepting, either (A) you should be able to fold without using that server or (B) somebody has to fix something.

Four of my GPUs have 171.67.108.52 as work server. Three are folding and one (the GTX 970) is not. Two other GPUs have 140.163.4.231 as work server and are folding.
Strangely the two GTX 870 started to fold a little while ago.
This log for one of the 780s that started to fold still has an error in it (at 02:11:48).

Now the only GPU not folding is the GTX 970 in the ASUS P7P55D EVO. Might be an incompatibility issue.

OK!
Got a new motherboard (Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming GT), new SSD (256GB), fresh install of Windows 7 Prof 64-bit, Windows updates, 4GB RAM,
NO anti-virus,
NO firewall.
Fresh install of F@H 7.3.6.
Still can not get the GTX 970 or the CPU (i7 4770K) to fold. No overclocking.
The following log is where I have only the GPU configured to fold. I removed the cpu to try to make it simple.
Code: Select all

My other two computers on my home network are folding.
Anyone have any idea why this GTX 970 will not fold?
Why do I constantly get the "Failed to read stream"?

Have you tried swapping the ethernet port this machine uses on the router with one for a working machine?
It's called "clutching at straws"

Swapped cables . . . . no help.
Pulled the plug from one computer which was folding and plugged it into the one that was failing. And vice versa. No change.

I still say it's your anti-spyware software. Your router doesn't have any idea which program is attempting to make an internet connection but local software can tell.
Apparently you can open
http://web.stanford.edu/~pande/Win32/AM ... ore_17.fah and
http://web.stanford.edu/~pande/Win32/AM ... ore_18.fah and
http://web.stanford.edu/~pande/Win32/AMD64/Core_a4.fah from your browser but FAHClient.exe is not allowed to make the same connection. Perhaps you have remnants of Norton360 or ZoneAlarm or something similar still present on your system. Local software can block "unauthorized" software. Until you figure out how to authorize FAHClient. exe to download a file from //web.stanford.edu/~pande/.... you're not going to be able to get a fresh copy of a FAHCore* so nothing is going to run.

I can
NOT open those web addresses in my browser on any of my computers.
I get:
As regards remnants of Norton360 or ZoneAlarm. I never had ZoneAlarm. I used a new drive for this install. I formatted the old drives.
The other two computers are folding on 5 different GPUs. Two Nvidia and three AMD.
But yes, I'd like to figure out what I cannot open those addresses in my browsers, and more importantly get the GTX 970 folding.
EDIT:
I took my router out of the equation. The computer with the GTX 970 folds when connected directly to my modem!
I can also open the web client and other web addresses now.
Now I have to figure out if my router is messed up.
